School closings in Alabama? anyone hear about this? (h1n1)

My Uncle did. He was on an army base at the time, doing a story for the paper, and they wanted everyone who was on the base to take the shot. Turned out more people died from the shot than anything else, which is funny in a totally not funny, dark humor sort of way.

Some of our schools closed last year. They reopened when they realized the swine flu was easier to get over than the regular flu, though they had planned to shut down for two weeks. It was strange . . . messed up people's schedules.

I work in a Microbiology lab in a hospital and it looks like I may be required to have the vaccine. The reason is mainly to protect patients from exposure and to prevent its spread if an employee was to contract it. But, I don't think that it's right to require me to be vaccinated. I do not have patient contact. I do flu testing as part of my job, so I do have a large risk of exposure, but we have a safety protocol that we follow during testing and it includes using safety equipment to prevent exposure. I'm very concerned, though, about a vaccine that has been rushed and not thoroughly tested. How do we know this is not the same one from 1978 that killed people? If you are a relatively healthy person without immunological problems, if you get H1N1, you will most likely feel very crumby for a few days, but you won't die from it. I'd rather take that over the possibility of dying from a vaccine designed to prevent an infection that most people can recover from. However, if you do have underlying health issues, an infection could be very serious, and most people who have died from it fall into this category. If that were me, I'd be talking to my doctor and getting all the info I could about this vaccine to try to make a good decision. It's a tough call for someone in that position.

By the way, though, the best prevention is to constantly wash your hands. Also, carry around hand sanitizer (the alcohol based kind) and use that periodically. Don't touch your nose, eyes, or mouth unless you've washed your hands immediately before. This is the best way to reduce the spread of this virus.

I dont know about your employment agreement but in most cases of health care workers they cant MAKE you have the shot, they can however tell you not to come to work if there is an outbreak and you choose to decline the vaccine BUT like I said it depends on the employment agreement.

OK, I haven't heard of any school closings just yet but in my county a football team has pulled out of a game due to this swine flu. It is more so a precautionary action rather than everyone is sick. There are over 1,000 reported cases here with it but it still hasn't become anything too serious. We had one person die this week from it in Montgomery, which is an hour from me.....

that is my update on that.....
