School fundraisers are evil....

In less than a month my 2 kids have brought home 3 school fundraisers!

LMAO my 5 year old just came home with another fundraiser. This one is to read books and get sponsor.

My oldest started kindergarten this yr....They had their fundraiser the 1st week of school....and it was tubs of COOKIE DOUGH!!!!

We have already had two this year, it amazes me the crap they want you to sell! And the kicker is we never live anywhere near relatives.....Who ends up buying them because the kids are devastated that they haven't sold any ME!!!!!! I now have 8 cookbooks for Christmas, OH and the paper to wrap them. I HATE FUND RAISERS! Whew that felt good to get off my chest.

I just got done picking the kids up from school and lo and behold what did they bring home? The fundraiser stuff that they sold! (to us and their grandparents only I might add...

Now the magazine subscriptions that are sold at a discounted rate are really great if they are selling the ones that we will benefit from. And this year they had two that I wanted.

The black and red striped candy dish with small gold stripes in between wasn't as puny as I expected it to be. Usually you pay $10-$12 for something like that and it ends up being the size of a corn cob.

The over the sink collander is okay......too small (not surprised) and looks cheap, but it will last for a little while.

The Santa cookie plate and noteholder was good sized and cute.

Over all I'm happier with this schools fundraiser than the district that we were in before. At the last district we were in everything was photographically misrepresented as larger than it was, and the quality was terrible.

And......

I got free Birthday wrapping paper!!!

Working in a school means I'm no stranger to school fundraisers. Teachers are the first people that get hit up to buy things. My rule is that I will only buy one thing from one student per fundraiser per year. Otherwise, I'd end up buying lots of things I really don't need.

So far this year, I've bought one sweatshirt ($20), a community discount card ($20) and an apple pie ($8). It's only October.

I can also understand the point of view of an organization head, however. I'm a Student Council advisor and this is Homecoming week (hence why I haven't been on BYC very much this week!). Our goal was to make at least $1,000 in ticket sales.

You think YOU hate fundraisers??? Hah!!!!!!! Pardon me while I climb up on my soapbox here a minute...... <strain> tall step...

Ok,, deep breath now..... don' wanna scare folks,,

Try being the teacher who hands out the fundraisers after a "pep-rally" from the company handling it. Promising all these prizes at different levels and oh boy a 5lb bar of chocolate if you sell a million and are drawn out of the hat! Giving these to children from households who can't afford to buy a regular hershey bar, with neighbors who can't do much better. Then they want to blame me for sending them home!
Yes the schools need money to purchase things we used to be able to purchase with school funds before No Child Left Behind took away funds for anything that were not Laura Bush's favorite items.
Try being the teacher who gets hit up by 30 students and you have to say no because you can't buy from everyone so you don't buy from anyone and you look like a bum.
I get hit up in class, I get hit up at home, I get hit up in the freakin' grocery store by kids who just know that "Miss" will buy something from them.
I don't need a $12.00 box of chocolate with 10 pieces of candy in it! I don't wrap things,, I buy gift bags to put them in, and the cute little wrapping paper slicer/cutter thingy is great IF you wrap things. Don't you just love the two sided tape dispenser to use with the fancy cutter/slicer on the expensive wrapping paper??? That you don't use anyway???????/
And how exactly how many little plastic dish cloth holders do they think I need??? I use paper plate, I throw them away!
I can't stand to see the disappointment of a student who doesn't sell a darn thing because they have no way to go anywhere to sell it to anyone they know. I ask the students flat out how many of them will actually sell something and I only give them the packet, I don't hand it to some kid who knows they won't sell anything and they don't have the money to buy anything. This lets them off the hook.
<breath>
And you thought YOU hated fundraisers???
Hah!

I am one of the Scout leaders in our area and did everything I could to get out of our pack doing the popcorn thing this year. However, it's a national campaign, and national gets a piece, then the region gets a piece, and then......finally the troop gets about 35% of the proceeds. I even tried to buy 'em off OMG!

they agreed, but I didn't, not at that price, talk about ridiculous.
The other unfortunate part is the boys families who really NEED the boy scouts couldn't afford many of the projects if it weren't for the popcorn sales.
And the incentives, evil incentives....ick.. its always the same kid who wins, because he's an only child who's entire family has never crossed the state line and six generations all live in the area, who all want to out do each other anyway you get my point....by the way, if anyone is interested in purchasing Boy Scout popcorn.......JUST KIDDING!!!!
