over 50% of the health problems in hospitals and health care system are smoking related. and the bill is paid for by non smokers and taxpayers for over 50% of those clients. hmm, thats a lot of money....

tobacco is worse than herion. its is sooo addictive,,, getting smokers off cigs is worse than breaking an illegal drug addiction,
don't belive me? try to stop for a week.
I worked on a throat cancer ward as an RN, lots of agony there.....
go visit a hospital, or hospice, and see how much is smoking related....
money can't buy back your health when you are old......or even middle aged.....

so the money for college argument doesn't hold,,, if it held then we could say slavery was great because it paid for trips to England for the planters sons.....

That seems really early to me. Kids don't start until the Wednesday before Labor day around here, which seems stupid. They go to school for 3 days then have a 3 day weekend

. Oh well, I have 3 years before my DD starts Kindergarten and I just don't know what I'm going to do with myself....

I don't have kids yet, but I'll be the mom crying on the first day of school!!

And as far as banning smoking on campus... GOOD. Then again, I live in California, where smoking is pretty much illegal everywhere. Sorry if I offend anyone, but cigarette smoke offends ME and I don't want to be exposed to it!

I start back on the 20th, students come back on 27th. They have been pushing it back for the last couple of years. Tourist industry here in NC is still going strong in August and the businesses loose a lot of their workers that go back to high school and college. In a few years I'm sure we will start going back after Labor Day which is how it was growing up in NJ. My sister started her first day of kindergarten on her 5th birthday, the day after Labor Day!

Students aren't allowed to drive to our campus. It's an alternative school. They either have to take the school bus or parents have to bring them. We wouldn't have the room for it either. We are using an old elementary school for a high and middle school.

As for smoking ban.........I'm an X-smoker after 30 years. I can tell you how bad it is for you but hey you are an adult. IF we were still smoking tobacco the way it was grown back when our parents were our age, I don't think we would have all the problems we have today. Look native americans have used tobacco for eons. They don't have the diseases with it that we do buying it from the store!! The cigarette companines have been caught red handed putting in aditives to the tobacco that makes it more additive not to mention all the chemicals they use on it these days. Tobacco is just about wiped out in NC. Phillip Morris the largest producer of tobacco products here is closing up shop and moving production overseas. Dunno if they are closing their plant up in Va as well or not.

Teachers paying for parking permits?? They are so underpaid it's ridiculous. And, they pay for lots of maerials out of their own pockets. Give them a break!
I do not want to be exposed to someone elses smoke...gross!! If you smoke, that's your business, but I chose not to and don't want to inhale secondhand smoke.
Hope this doesn't turn into another battle! Chill......

My kids start back tomorrow

Why they want to start them back in the middle of the week is beyond me.

When I was in school we always started on a Monday:old

You might want to try a lawsuit. Your children do attend a public school right? You pay taxes right? They do not have the right to charge you for parking. Everyone will argue otherwise, just because someone does it does not make it right. Regardless just the whiff of a lawsuit got my sister free parking last year in school. They would rather lose one parking permit then all of them....

Bubba

PS I am with Carrie, I hate cigs and people that smoke them everywhere.

PSS Just because something has put generations of people through (sp) college does not make it right. People have lived off organized crime, illegal drug and alcohol production, among other things to pay for college. A fact most people do not know is that our Founding Fathers all grew Cannabis (It was mandated back then if you had a farm to grow it). We even begged farmers to grow it during World War 2. That crop put ALOT of people through college and yet it is illegal now.

As for parking permits, I think it depends on the school situation. Our funds went to support a person that would watch our cars due to theft in the area.

Then, what about public universities? Parking permit here is about 300 a quarter if you are a student... or 11 a day if you don't have one and want to park on campus. We pay taxes and still have to pay for that and our tuition. I find a 15 fee reasonable for a year long hs pass.

Thursday is the happy day for us!!! Now, when the baby starts kindergarten next year I will be crying!!

As for students paying to park, I think that's a great way to introduce them to the responsibilities of the adult world.

Bravo for the smoke free campus! Yes, I have my vices too (1 being CHICKENS). When I was in school you could see the packs of cigarettes in the teachers pockets (in grade school). They smelled like cigarettes when they came out of the teachers lounge(HS). That made it more acceptable to the students, the cool teachers smoked, why shouldn't they? My dad was a cool teacher who smoked. I cannot help but blame his smoking vice for his premature death. At his funeral my daughter said she wish she had known Grampa. He was incoherent for the last 8 years of his life.

I'm a Tennessean too, albeit a transplant. We pass tobacco fields all over and the kids want to know why it even exists. Thank God their exposure to tobacco and smoking is so limited! We watched my MIL die for 3 days of lung cancer, it was agonizing.
