Schools and candy

I always make sure there is sugar free candy and I have several dessert cookbooks for diabetics that I will make something out of. It's only fair!

You probably would have been a great teacher for me then! I've gotta admit I had some awesome teachers and aids who ALWAYS made sure there was something for me. It's difficult for everyone to do that though because they just don't realize there are people who can't have sugar like everyone else. As an adult I'm perfectly fine sitting out on sweets. I was a smart kid, but it was still difficult for my mom to explain why everyone else could do so much that I couldn't in terms that a kid would understand!

What about teachers who give big chunks of bakers chocolate to second graders without telling them what it is? I had funny teachers

our elementary school recently "outlawed" candy too. the middle and high schools are still allowed to have it, but the younger kids aren't? that hardly seems fair! especially for little kids, isn't candy a better and more immediete reward for good work than good grades are? i mean, grades are importent too, but kids like candy too!!!

WHY is it the schools problem anyways? If a parent signs a consent form that their kid can eat the candy... WHAT is it to the school?
What my kid eats is none of your business...

What they eat at home is not the school's business, what they eat at school is the school's business. How would you feel if out of a class of 30 students there were 20 with permission slips that said they could eat candy and 5 that said no? Are you willing to go to that class and tell those 5 tough cookies honey,, you have to watch everyone else eat goodies you can't have! I'm not just a teacher, I'm a parent too, and I would not put a child through that.

My post wasnt directed to you, WoW..
And i stand by my post..
Sadly, not all the kids will be able to eat candy...you are right..
But as many have said, there are many ways around that, so the child doesnt feel left out...

This is one of the things that drives me NUTS.... too many people sticking their noses in how folks choose to raise their children...
I can see why people choose to homeschool... enough is enough.

I just wanted to make sure everyone knows that juvenile diabetes is not caused by excess weight or too much sugar, which is a common misconception. It is actually a genetic thing which causes a complete lack of insulin production. Type 2 diabetes (adult onset) is caused by excess weight, aging, and sometimes people are genetically predisposed to it. Type 2 is usually insulin resistance as opposed to lack of insulin. The worry is that younger and younger people are getting diagnosed with type 2. In the past, type 2 occurred in people over the age of 20, but usually much later. Now people in their twenties and even children are experiencing type 2 symptoms! I guess the major difference is no amount of diet changes or restrictions can prevent type 1 (juvenile), but a change in diet can help (or worsen) type 2. I know it's off topic, but I don't want people thinking my parents fed me a horrible diet as a child!

Not in our schools they didn't. The little kids at least had recess. By the time they got to middleschool, they had no recess. No chance to run around.
