Anything by N. K. Jemisin but especially the Broken Earth trilogy.

They're classics so you've probably already read them but Ursula K. Le Guin's work is always worth a re-read imo (and worth mentioning for anyone reading this thread who's new to the genre).

Since you mentioned SF in the title I'll also chuck in a recommendation for a collection of short stories I come back to again and again - Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology edited by Bruce Sterling. All older works but a good intro while also being a quick, easy read you can dip in and out of.

Liu Cixin (often written as Cixin Liu in English) is good for SF too - both short stories and full length novels.

Aha! Some great suggestions! I’m glad I created this thread so I will have ample future books to read. Currently I am reading Murtagh which is part of the Eragon era.

It's been years since I read it, but I remember reading Hiero's Journey by Sterling E. Lanier and liking it. And there are sequels, "The Unforsaken Hiero", and "“Hiero’s Answer”, which I have not read yet.

Project Hail Mary! It's not a series, just a standalone, but it's one of the better sci-fi books I've read recently.

Same! I had to look it up to see when the release date was. Starring RYAN GOSLING?? I don't think I've seen him in a bad movie. I'm optimistic!

I really liked the first few books in Wheel of Time, but it really got bogged down (and the author died) and got lost in its own universe somewhere around book 9, never finished it and don’t have the time or heart to start over!

Finally sat down and finished Harry Potter, meh, teenage angst, first few books are fun but won’t be rereading.

I read some of the dragonlance books back in the day, they were pretty good but I don’t remember anything!

Obviously Lord of the Rings, Hobbit isn’t bad, Silamarillion is okay but only for total nerds.

The Worm Ouroboros is interesting, sort of a cross between medieval romance and Greek mythology, really an overlooked book.

Cs Lewis’s Space Trilogy (Out of 5he Silent Planet, Perelandra, That Hideous Strength) is really good and often overlooked, interesting stories and lots of food for thought. His Narnia books are pretty good, but read the entire series, not just Wardrobe, Silver Chair is tedious but not awful, other books are good. Also try GK Chesterton’s The Man Who Was Thursday, it is a hoot (check project Gutenberg for a free copy).

If you are a Star Wars fan (original trilogy!) the X wing books and I, Jedi by Michael Stackpole and Aaron Alliston(?) are way better than all the new movies, I was rather miffed when they trashed the whole extended universe and replaced it with subpar material.

The early Dragonriders of Pern books are a good read, they get a little questionable in the early 2000s though.

The Dealing with Dragons books are a fun, light, funny read.

The Plant that Ate Dirty Socks is pretty good, even if it is a kid’s book!

The Wingfeather books are pretty good, geared for kids but a good story and a bit of wry humor.

Wasn’t real impressed with Percy Jackson.

The Last Unicorn is fun and sentimental and a bit odd but a good book.

A Wrinkle in Time is well written and a fascinating story.

I’m probably forgetting something but that’ll get you started! I’m impressed you finished the Eragon books, I tried, but couldn’t get halfway in the first book, I got bored. Never tried Game of Thrones, a bit too violent and depressing for my taste, I’d rather reread Jane Austen!

I loved Wingfeather when I read it! I’ve read the first of a wrinkle in time and have about half of the books.
