Hi all,

One of my Buff Orpingtons has scissor beak. It is not very bad though, I am not sure what to do. Help please? (I would post pictures but it is dark and the chickens are in the coop.)

She is about 10 weeks old.

Thank you!

This is a common birth defect, and may get worse as she grows. They can live a fairly normal life if you feed them moist chickens feed out of a bowl with tall sides. You may want to learn about filing down or slightly trimming the beak to help her pick up food and bugs. Here is a good link to read:

I had a Colombian Wyandotte rooster with a severe cross beak. He lived a long happy life! I did not make special food for him, I did not help him eat. He ate on his own and did just fine. You just never know how well they can do left to their own devices. Here's photos of Elwood P Dowd. He was killed by a dog but was a wonderful and very nice rooster.

I also have a chick that I have just gotten yesterday that has a little scissor beak but I’m worried she isn’t eating and is wobbly when she walks she is a blue laced Wyandotte

This is Crooky at about 12 weeks. She is now 3 years old. Her crossing has gotten slightly worse but with wet feed and deep dishes she is holding her own. She has trouble grooming properly.

There is a good chance your bird can live a good life.
