The vinegar/baking soda puts the chicks to sleep and is very humane. There was no suffocating and took 3 seconds for the process to be over.

I'd much rather do this then take an axe to the head.

I used a gallon ice cream pail. I put 1/2 cup of vinegar in a measuring cup. I set the chick next to the cup and poured the baking soda in, covered the lid quickly which produced the gas. The chick went quickly and never got wet.

I refuse to let any animal suffer. I broke my neck a few years ago and I suffer enough myself. I don't wish suffering upon any living animal ever.

Not to be nit-picking, but if suffocating is 'dying from lack of oxygen', then the chick suffocated, because it was overwhelmed by CO2. Their high respiratory rate probably makes it pretty quick.

And, if I had to kill a chick, I would do the same, because I couldn't snip of the neck.
