:Dhi! im new to the forum=] we got chickens last week and was wondering what scraps they wernt and were alowed.

thx:)

From what I've read (I'm pretty new to this too) NO:

Banana peels, raw potatoes, plants of the tomato family (I guess they are toxic), anything that's moldy.

Mine LOVE watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, cucumbers and bread. (I give them the ends)

We just had an unexpected early frost (31 degrees!!!), and I had to pick all my tomatoes if I wanted to save any. I ended up with soooo many green ones, I chopped some up and fed them to the chickens and turkeys. They LOVE them!

Mine go crazy for grubs out of the grass (we gather them together when we find em, for the girls), and fresh strawberries. I also save the corn cobs after dinner for them to peck at, but after a bit the corn cobs get tossed to the horses.

A simple rule of thumb is-if you can eat it they can eat it. When we clean out the fridge the chickens get everything that's not spoiled.

I read in a poultry book No Citrus...too much acid for them....but you can give them GARLIC...powdered in there feed, whole better...good for there immune system.
