Scratch Recipe

Thanks for the input WYO-Helpmeet. My girls really love their peanuts and I'm sure they would get fat if I gave them free access to peanuts. I only give them as a treat, mixed in with their scratch grains each morning. While surfing the net to determine if peanuts were "good or bad" for layers I came across a project page inviting people to feed their layers peanuts and monitor any change in their laying habits or egg quality. I wonder if your friend may have participated in that project. Thanks again for the advice and I'll post an update if I find any further info on peanuts as a supplement.

I buy 50 pounds bags of whole oats, cracked corn, and sunflower seeds, and mix them 1 part oats, 1 part cracked corn and .5 part sunflower seeds. Ive heard people say that they also love cheap bird seed with milo in it, so I might add some of that also, to see if they like it. I throw out a feed scoop morning and evening to the whole crew.

Hi Mahonri. I don't chop up my peanuts. I buy them in bulk from a local hardware store. They're hulled and smaller than peanuts you buy in a can for people snacks as they are sold for wild bird food. My girls gooble them up with no problem. It's really quite amazing the size thngs that chickens can swallow. I watched a video yesterday of a chicken kiiling a small snake and swallowing it whole. Cheers.

here locally in GA. the feed stores have 9 , 11 and 13 way scratch as they call it with either 9, 11 or 13 diffrent grains and seeds in it. i need to see if it would be cheeper to mix my own. keep up the chicken receipes fellow chickeners. KING OF THE FAT CHICKLENS.

I do cracked corn, milo, barley, oats, BOSS, and as of recently I added hard red winter wheat.

It would be easier to buy a bag of scratch, but I enjoy mixing this up.

Hey I've been meaning to ask if people use any of the wild bird seed mixes or other birds like parot foods for scratch and what your opinion on this is. I noticed Cindy mention that she uses a pigeon food for hers and I have seen these at the store many times. It looks like it would be a great treat.

In the winter i give mine scratch feed with a scoop or 2 of sweet feed(horse feed) They love that stuff and id imagine it really puts the fat on them.
