Lots of information missing here for me to decide to sympathize with you or not.

What were the plans that fell through? You bought chicks with no place to keep them? Who was supposed to build this coop? What do you consider a ghetto run?

My advice, get rid of the chicks and start over. This time don't put the horse before the cart.

Build the coop and the run and then get the chicks.

Hoping for the best

Rancher, sorry but I suggest like you said, you don't know the details so I wouldn't be jumping to conclusions. Shoot many many many of the regulars and oldies on here get chicks with only a brooder and build the coop in the coming weeks after the chicks are still under a light, and not build before. So why are you going to single out suzyq over the older members?

I just dont like how you sounded quite so mean about it, please ask the circumstances before you comment on something you don't know? it makes you come across as being quite rude.

I would scout CL... even put up a wanted ad on there...
Good luck!

Suzyq I suggest you just go and buy some plyboard and some 90 degree braces and a sheet of tin. brace the plyboard together slap on the tin or plastic top and stick a hole in one side and you got yourself a quick coop till you have the extra time to do it right. I've helped throw together coops, horse shelter, dog houses etc for friends, family, neighbors etc in a pinch because of poor planning, planning falling through, or bad weather knocking pre existing structures over and some shelter was needed. I just threw together a new dog house because one of my hand built ones got flattened by a tree limb last week, and so in the rain i'm out there fixing a A frame like structure with some plastic, 2X4's, and a scrap of plyboard to give one of my dog's a house till pay day next week when I can buy the quality material to fix a new one!

I never thought of plywood. I think when I panic I dont come up with good ideas. we have some bad storms coming the next few days. weather permitting i'll get something together quick!

That's shockingly judgmental. If you don't feel you can sympathize, just don't post. The OP is looking for assistance not additional stress. And I think telling the OP to simply "get rid of the chicks and start over" is incredibly irresponsible advice.

Suzyq, I'm sorry I don't have any advice, but the other posters suggested some good ideas here. Plywood is cheap and you can easily assemble into a temporary shelter, the "build a coop" party idea was a good one too. I understand that sometimes "stuff happens", and I hope you are able to be creative and motivated and come up with something to at least hold the chickies over. And ignore anyone who suggests abandoning your pets because of a construction glitch.

I think you have started raising chickens the way most of us have. Our coop didn't come into existance until week 8. Everyone here has good ideas. Don't panic.

If your flock is going to be outside at night they need security from pedators otherwise keep them inside until you can make this happen.

Look around the house or garage for an old piece of funiture that can be set upside down or on it's side. Be creative.

Office desk or kitchen table with chicken wire wrapped around the legs. Use plastic cable ties to secure it.

Upside down baby crib

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Well i found a cheap use rabbit hutch (ware mfg) on craigslist for the garage for now! I have plywood for the quick coop ill start on that tomorrow if it doesnt rain. Otherwise I will have to work with my father on building a coop. I hope he isnt busy this week and can come over and help with the quick coop. Thats its name for now! LOL
