It's hot here, but not that hot. Just 92-94 degrees, and 5 degrees less in the shade. Chickens all have fans. But when they are all panting, I run the hose on the ground and they all stand in the water, then no one is panting after that!

Poor Suede. I've had to dunk a chicken or two in the past. Maybe he needs a mid day dunk, or a foot soak.

Great pics Kathy...that is adorable.

I want you all to meet Batman, my Coch'anver...sunbathing Batman style

Kathy, in that last pic the baby does seem to be enjoying his hug.

Great pic LH!

Well the heatwave finally left yesterday evening. I did not loose any to the heat but I did loose one to that darn fox

I know we have at least two fox in the area and I am constantally checking on the birds and listening for any alarms. I also have a radio on that I turn up a little louder in the day. DH has gone after them a few times but so far no luck.

aaaawwwwww my beautiful boy is tired and hot. Dang those loud women...don't they know he needs his quiet time? Pen them up with the hormonal Gideon for a few hours to learn them Cyn. Poor old man looks tired....this heat is wearing him out isn't it? Lancelot does the exact same thing though and he is just about to turn 2 years old....so it is not old age.

He is very tired every night. He also stands differently, not upright as much, more with his head hunched in and "squatty", especially toward the end of the day. His crow is so weak, too. He just seems exhausted, poor sweet old man. He's never gone to roost way before the hens until this past couple of weeks. It even started before the heatwave.

Cyn, I hope he's just tired, but.......

I am so bummed, too. All my vaccinated Polish that I hatched seem to be dying off. Now I read that Marek's knocks their immune system low and they are targets for any opportunistic bugs that come along. Coccidiosis seems to go hand in hand with Marek's. Here I thought this was going to be so good, and other illnesses are wiping them out. I think next year I will be trying to hatch my own, as they are supposed to be resistant to Marek's.

I come home this morning to find one Polish pullet sleeping on the roost, with one eye closed. So she is on antibiotics and in my bedroom.

You know, I never see anyone posting about their very old, very large Orpington roosters here. Suede is a good 13-14 lbs when he isn't in full molt and he'll soon be 6 years old. He's lived a good long life for a rooster his size, IMO, a good healthy life other than his brief bout with pneumonia last year during a weird weather time. He's been well-loved and appreciated and given much in return. I hope he'll stay with us a few more years, but if he has to go, he's earned his rest.

That makes sense about the Mareks and the opportunistic stuff taking advantage of their lowered immunity.
