I'm sure there will be someone who will lecture me on this, but.....what the heck....I let my girls have dry cat food.....at 30% protein, ya can't beat it. They gobble it down like there's no tomorrow. And after several years of this practice, I've yet to see them have any problems with it. Besides, it's far less expensive than some of these specialty chicken feeds.

I tried the cat food thing but they didn't like it and I no longer have a cat. Everyone has their own system and you have to do what works for you.

I just want to throw this out there. I have a friend who has been unable to eat eggs for years. I gave them some of mine and he's fine. Doesn't get sick. Well it just so happens that while I was away he decided to try Egglands Best. They made him sick also.

Don't know why but glad I can provide him with eggs.

Well today the lights start to come on at 5am then in the evening extend to 8 pm. Also the protein is high. I forgot to say they get yogurt and fish once a wk plus meat left overs. Like I said spoiled girls for sure. Its warm here as well. Last night was in the 60's so is tonight. I miss the mtns. Gloria Jean

COLD here (in the 40s all day, uuggghhh). I would extend the hours of light in the morning only (mine come on at 430am, off at 830am). I'm told if you extend evening hours, the lights suddenly go off then the birds are left with no way to get to the roost. Natural light diminishing slowly is what triggers them to roost

Just a thought

I keep a red light on all night in my coop. Not a heat lamp, just a 25 watt red bulb. It's just enough to allow them a bit more settling in time in the evening, but not bright enough to keep them up all night. As such, I've often noticed a few of my girls out pecking around in the yard long after sunset. I dunno

....maybe that's the ticket. Whatever it is,....the light.....the cat food...my girls are laying pretty darn good. They're averaging 7-10 eggs a day out of 15 girls of laying status.

My birds have been molting too and they will slow down or stop laying when in molt. The gamebird feed is good. I have nightlights on 24/7/365 in all of my coops so there is always a little light. I use 7 watt bulbs and it is enough light for them. They go in to roost a little before dusk and are out at dawn. My birds have been molting for a couple of months and are nearing the end of their molts. Currently I have around 200 birds and they haven't all molted at the same time.

For those who may or may not remember my squirrel problem? Something had gotten into the hoop coop and chewed through the plastic container of grower.

I had already captured a squirrel and disposed of it and I did know there was a black squirrel in the area, but thought things were good.

Well I decided to take the rat trap and nail it to the tree nearest the coop. I did so last evening and low and behold there was a small grey squirrel in the trap this am.

I had also set the hav a heart too. Just in case.

Now if you do use a "rat trap" for squirrels I suggest you nail it to something they can't drag away. I used the tree, but have plans to set some nailed to a 2 X 10.

I've lost a few mouse traps. One being that plastic easy set trap. 2 for $5. They are easy to set but I'm not sure how to keep them from being dragged off.

There also is a video on Youtube on how to build a weasel trap that may be very useful to anyone with a weasel problem. I'm sure it would work good.

But not on relatives who are weasels.

I have a light in the coop used in times past but decided not to use it this year. I've also thought of putting up some Christmas lights inside the coop. I have lights hanging all around my garden. It looks nice when I go out to close things up.

I didn't do anything special for my BR's that were molting when I left. They looked good when I came back but haven't been laying eggs. They aren't that good of layers as it is.

The Dels must be happy to see me as they are laying pretty good considering. But they've always been my best layers anyhow.

Poor Norma Jean, my DD's cat has licked all her fur off her butt and tail. She'd done this before when my DD lived alone. She too is happy to see me since her fur is growing back.

I'm allergic to cats and dogs but I just can't let her suffer so I pet her even though I shouldn't.

I sometimes leave the TV on for her when I'm out.

Have you ever heard of Nu-Stock? It would work well on the cat, I bet.

Listen my affection can cure lots of things. Why would I buy a medicine? And I'm organic.

Pierce's All Purpose Nu-Stock has been tested and used for over thirty years. It has proven to be effective for fast relief of many animal skin, hair and fur conditions. Nu-Stock also eliminates certain types of growths on animals..

The only condition she has is loneliness.
