But I want to saddle her and let her get used to the feel of it again ya know. I will measure her girlish figure when she gets here so I can girth shop....I hate getting them too big so there is tons left over.

I shall make two loaves of bread then hmmmmm better make it three or four...one for your hubby, one for my hubby and 2 for the rest of us.

We lost our little Esme this morning...Cheyenne's Mille Fleur girl. After a long conversation with Lori, who was surprised when we did not lose her as chick and she stopped eating, we have concluded it was an internal problem as she was coming in to lay. she was eating, drinking and her poo was good but she would fluff up and sit down. So I brought her inside and watched yesterday and she was fine except for fluffing up every once in a while...Cheyenne found her this morning in the hospital tote.

So Lori is bringing Cheyenne 3 of her project d'uccle pullets they are lavender splits (Dad is a Mille and Mom is Lavender that carries the mottled gene)...so babies will be interesting, especially if they get to visit with Spike for a few minutes (my porcelain cockerel).

So sorry to hear about little Esme

Good news and bad news here. Your little yellow grandchickie is doing good.....the other baby I helped hatch out last night will definitely NOT make it. It's head is stuck tucked underneath. I held it for a while tonight but it was very cold...... Poor baby. I tucked it under the momma and dont expect it to make it through the night. HOWEVER, another chick hatched! A cute little black chick, out of an olive egg. It is doing great so far.

PLUS, another egg has pipped and ANOTHER egg is rocking. She is a busy bee, that little hen.

The chick that hatched out the other day under my leghornX hen is huge. I think it was from my Jersey Giant hen.......crossed over a cochin....probably one of my big blue cochin boys. So it should be a LARGE cochin x. Sweet

Hey all,

So I was at the local co-op today and asked them about ordering chicks... they said that they can special order different breeds for no additional cost (because they have to order 100 chicks at once anyway)... but anyway, I was looking, and they DO have Delawares! So I was thinking I'd order 8 hens in february (which is when they start ordering, lol).

But... I was just wondering... do any of you know about the quality of chicks from Welp Hatchery (www.welphatchery.com) because this is where those chicks will be coming from. I'm pretty excited though... I do have one more question.... do you think they will mix very well with the Buff orpingtons? I feel bad that I won't be able to hatch out pure Delawares, even if I got a Delaware roo, chances are I would end up hatching pure buffs, pure delawares and buff/delawars and delaware/buffs! Especially since I would have no control over which roo is doing the duties and wouldn't be able to tell which hen layed what!

Anyway... getting kinda excited, yeah. Also, can anyone reccomend to me good breeds that lay interesting colored eggs? Like deep red brown, blue, green ect? And would mix well with birds like orps and delawares?

Cetawin, I am so sorry about Esme-

I am bringing you reins and a stand, too, I forgot. You just need a girth and a saddle pad - and grooming stuff.

My boss is threatening to fire the other girl at work and put me back to at least 4 days. I don't want to!!! I want to play with my chickies!!!!!

Redfeather, I do not know anything about Welp - I have no experience with hatcheries except from what I know about the chickens my neighbors got and gave to me - BR and BSL

*storms in from the coop after putting the chickens away for the night*

Hey, I just might be able to get those silkies I've always wanted... because frankly, Big Red Soup is sounding just dandy tonight. I went out there and he was wing dragging me, and even attacked my legs. I am mad. I pulled him down from his roost because he was pecking me for no reason (I usually go in there and stroke him a bit) and then he started charging my legs. Grr, I am mad. Well, it was nice having a nice roo for a while. Maybe he's just grumpy cuz he's moutling. *hurt feelings* big dumb bird.

Redfeather ...
You ask about keeping Delawares and Buff Orps together .... yes, they would do just fine together. I do not know about the hatchery stock ..... I have heard some of the hatcheries have rather aggressive Delawares, but don't know which hatcheries. Delawares SHOULD be very mellow and calm.

LadyHawk,
So sorry for Cheyenne's loss of Esme. Give her a hug for me.

redfeathers it sounds like he is grumpy and you messed with him...also they have very very poor eyesight from dusk till dawn so you could have startled him. See how he reacts tomorrow before you get too upset with him.

Seriously if you want good Delaware babies, wait till spring and get babies from one of these ladies. They come from great lines for laying, type and personality. I do not know about Welp hatchery but most hatchery Delaware have coumbian rock lines in them heavily and they end up marked more coumbian rock than Delaware. Also, hatchery Delaware seem to be more aggressive and not as friendly overall.

For the dark reddish brown eggs...look at Welsummers or Marans. Easter Eggers for your green eggs amd blue your Ameraucana or Araucana...beware hatcheries sell "Ameraucanas" but they are Easter Eggers.

Thank you all and Cheyenne says thank you too. She is sad but Lori is bringing her 3 little d'uccle pullets next week so she is excited. She misses Esme though and so does Emmett. Lori is thrilled because she was not having any success trying to sell her babies...she wanted them to go where she can follow them so she is happy they are coming here. She has 20 of them. hahahaha

Cheyenne was so sweet as upset as she was she said "Well Mom at least it was not one of yours like when we found Thor, that hurt and he was not even mine".
