Alright Cetawin....pix coming in a minute. Your girl currently has 5 babies under her. One of the eggs I took from her yesterday hatched under my big rir/cochin hen, so i stole it back and gave it to your girl. Another of those eggs is pipped....if it hatches tonight I will steal it tomorrow morning and give it to your hen too. She is a small hen so she is running out of room under there! LOL. I think I saw another egg rocking.....I think there are either 3 or 4 eggs left that could hatch inthe next few days. I might need to play chick switcharoo....

Redfeather, I'm so happy your littlest chick is making a turn around. Now, aren't you glad you didn't cull him/her? This is one of the BO's you hatched out, right? Did this one have any trouble making it out of it's shell? I seem to recall something you said in the other thread about having to help a couple of them out of their shells? Is that correct, or do I have my head on upside down again?

[Don't laugh! It happens more often than I care to admit!]

If you can, get some Pedialyte to it. You can find it in the baby products aisle of your local grocery store. If you don't see it, ask for it. It's a near miracle tonic for baby chicks. It contains electrolytes that the wee one might not be getting since s/he isn't eating as well as the others. That's great news that she has gained 5 grams!

To build on that, offer him/her some scrambled eggs, cooked oatmeal and maybe some yogurt. How old is s/he now? Check with Cynthia, as she knows so much more than I do about these things. If the chick is only a few days old, things like scrambled eggs, yogurt and cooked oatmeal might be more than their little digestive system can handle right now. Adding pasty butt to his/her situation would not be good!

Keep us posted and let us know how the little one does! I'll keep my fingers crossed that s/he continues to improve!

Hi Everybody!! Don't know about y'all but gonna have to get the canoe out here. It's been raining all day. Looks like it will be in the 20's this weekend, brrrr. Got home early from work and finished one side of the brooder and put Ms. Broody pants in there. She still setting on the 3 fake eggs. So I have a quick question. I would like for her to take over the raising of the eggs I have in the bator. Should I give her the eggs before they hatch? Wait till they hatch and then give her the chicks? or wait till they start to hatch and then give them to her? This situation is a first for me. I've had broodies hatch eggs out before but they sat on them the whole time. Thanks for any input!!

to everyone!!

Yes, I did have to assist two of the chicks. They pipped and gave up, started becoming shrink wrapped. I hadn't even read about assisting, but I knew enough about eggs to figure it out... afterwards I found out that I did pretty much everything right in that respect.

But yeah, I am pretty sure this is probably the one that had a really hard time hatching... but she's (hopefully a she, lol) doing a ton better right now. I am not to worried about her nutrient intake (and yes they are only about a week old) because I witnessed her eating frequently... she was just expending so much more energy than the others with her ceaseless heavy panting. The panting has completely stopped now, and she only sneezes a little every once in a while. My dad suspects she had pnuemonia or something of the like. I just weighed her and she's 53 grams while some of the others are weighing in at 106!!! She's matching their growth rate now, even if she is a little disadvantaged. My dad says it's all a ploy to become a "pet" chicken...

She's very cuddly when you pick her up and enjoys having her head massaged.

Okay, so the chick who had been struggling died last night. The mom knew because she had kicked it out of the nest a few times the first day and I kept putting it back underneath. it "looked" better the last few days but was still much more lethargic than the rest. You can see it in the pix I posted yesterday just sitting in the nest while the others were with the mom. Poor chickie. Also, finally lost the one eyed blue rock/delaware boy.....he was a sort of failure to thrive chick...half the size of his sister...and started struggling a few days ago. So neither was unexpected.

I didn't have time to check under the "big mom" but will do so tonight. I expect to see a little chickie sitting under there, ready to be stolen and handed off to the "little mom". Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and find two little chickies, ha ha ha.

Been raining here since yesterday also. Took a nice spill on the back steps this morning. Guess they have been added to my to-do list. They need to be scrubbed clean of algae/mildew and have something "rough" put on them so I dont' break my neck during witner.
