I have a "red" hen that looks like a hatchery version of those New Hampshires......

Kathy, those trios are gorgeous!! Good thing Maggie didn't see those boys! She may have never agreed to the big move!

Cynthia, sweetie, I'm so sorry Olivia is now gone. But I know you gave her the very best life possible for any chicken, and that's all that really mattered. She was so very loved, and through your devotion to her, the rest of us got the chance to discover just how special she was! Thank you!

I'm certain, right down to my toes, that Ivy is even now showing Olivia the best places to dust bathe, where the juiciest bugs can be found and where the most handsome "men" hang out in heaven. Take heart my friend, in the knowledge that Olivia is finally at peace and free from any pain or stress.

Nella...if I were you, I think I'd sleep with the doors locked tonight! And keep a big stick next to the bed. That is one very torqued and ticked broody there! I don't think I'd trust her any further than I can sling a 50# bag of you know what! And that ain't far!

OK, I've been promising pictures of Maggie and the twins, Lisette and Cosette for over a week now. I still can't believe I've had them nearly two weeks already. Maggie is the very model of a perfect little mama hen. She puts up with so much shenanigans from those two little girls! And she takes it all in her stride.

So far, they don't seem to mind that their most immediate neighbors are three crazy roosters in the adjoining covered run. Maggie, for the most part, just ignores everyone on the other side of the fence, provided they ignore her. There have been a few cases of face to face confrontations that made me glad there was plenty of fencing between her and the offending little lady.

Maggie never instigates these confrontations from what I can see. She's perfectly content with life consisting of just her and the twins. But from these encounters, I can already tell that she'll do just fine for herself when the time comes [in a few more days] to integrate her into the rest of the flock. She doesn't back down, EVER, and she doesn't take guff off of anyone!

So, naturally, when one of my girls decides she's going to assert her position in the established pecking order, Maggie is more than happy to respond with a resounding "So what's your point, wench?" At least that's what it looks like to me. To say that she is completely unimpressed with any of the hostile posturing some of my more snarky girls have displayed would be like saying the Sahara is a little dry!

She just refuses to be cowed or impressed!

OK, so let's get to some pictures, shall we? Y'all have waited more than long enough!

I snapped a few of these about a half hour or so before they started heading to bed last night. It's one of the cutest times to sit back and observe mama and the babies in my book. And this is where Maggie's patience gets tested to the limit! I can tell that she just wants to go into their coop, snuzzle down and go to sleep. But the twins are usually wound tighter than a pocket watch and are still ready and raring to go. Some days, it can take a considerable reserve of patience just to get them into the coop! Let alone get them to settle down and sleep!!

Step one: Get them pointed in the direction of the coop:

Step two: Get them INTO the coop! No! In! Not out! IN! IN! IN!!!

Step three: Get everyone to settle down comfortably for the night. This was attempt #1 at the "comfortably" settled in stage.

I did mention the "comfortably" aspect of settling in, right? I'm not sure, but I don't think that includes using mama as your own personal feather bed!

Sometimes you just have to blow off the patience routine and put your wing down! Over the chick that is! Laugh if you want. It works for Maggie!

And yes, it was Cosette causing all the ruckus last night. Lisette is such a sweet and well behaved little girl. I've only caught her outside of their yard two times since arriving here. And both times were with her sister. Cosette? I can't even count how many times I've caught her being naughty. But at least she hasn't tried any more of her little escape artist stunts this week. I think she has finally figured out that it's not going to do her any good. I'm just gonna put her back in with mom and sis anyhow!

Kathy, I just love these little ladies. I can't begin to thank you enough for sending them to me. They are, for all of their shenanigans, the most delightful little girls I know!

I owe ya lady! Big time!!

OK, just one more day of hunting season to get through. And 4:00 is gonna come too early by half. Enjoy the pics and I'll catch up to y'all tomorrow afternoon or so. Have a great night folks, and an even better tomorrow!
