AHEM, Ms LadyHawk. We need to have words. Your little lady? Is RACIST. I checked on her brooder this morning and all black chicks were "missing"......she had them terrified and huddled in the corner behind the waterer. As soon as they crept out she went crazy kung fu on them. So I took her out and stuck her in my black mottled pen. LOLOL. That is payback right there. Don't like the black chickens? Here, live with 6 of them. I tossed my last 2 mottleds in there also, making it 1 Mr Mottled rooster, 5 black mottled girls, 1 blue mottled girl plus your girl. She was having a rough time of it when I left but nothing life threatening. By adding 2 other girls today, that should spread out "the love".

Her brooder kids were happy as can be once she was gone. The black chicks were finally able to get back out of the corner. They are 2 roosters and 1 girl, so its strange she wants to boot them. She allows the blue wheaten and splash boys to stay near her, just not the black ones. strange.

Great pictures... I especially like the BR/Dellie girl. Seems like the perfect breed!

Got some sad news yesterday. Karen (lockedhearts) called me yesterday--Dutch died. She called because she didn't want to PM me, thought I'd rather hear it in person. She said he was molting and she saw him hunched, but that would be normal in this weather, with him missing feathers. Then the next day, she found him dead in the coop. Makes me sad-I did love that butthead, even if I could no longer trust him around me. She said he did mellow out some, but could be he wasn't feeling well, too. Hard to tell what's wrong with them sometimes, especially when molting causes so many things to be different with them.

On the other hand, Mace, Dutch and Zane's younger brother who went to live with her a long time before Dutch did, is doing really well. He was always such a sweet rooster. He was raised by my Olivia, in fact. Gosh, I miss my Livvie! She was just the most precious little sweet soul.

Hey Kathy! Call Mike to the computer. These are expressly for HIM!!

I got an early than normal start to the day this morning, and decided that it was the perfect morning for a mega meal for the chickens. So I mixed up a concoction of oatmeal, mixed berries, one apple chopped up into bite sized pieces, mixed veggies and of course YOGURT!!

While that was cooking up in the microwave, I went out and did all of the usual things for my babies: Bring out fresh clean [warm] water, clean up the poo, set down filled feed dishes of scratch and layer crumble. Just the usual. They had no clue of what was to come!

I made up four dishes of this lovely meal. One for the boys to share, two main dishes for the flock overall, and one just for Maggie, Lisette and Cosette. Sometimes those three have a bit of trouble getting their fair share. Being the new kids on the block, they're still at the bottom of the pecking order.

And if that rotten dang Dottie chases Cosette one more time, I swear I'm gonna have her butt on a platter!

Well, Maggie and Cosette were out in the run when I came back out with the warm breakfast and I couldn't convince them to come inside of the coop for their own private meal. Actually, the two of them did pretty darn good for a change. Don't believe me? Well, then look for yourself!

Penny is the BSL on the left and Gretchen is the red something or other on the right. Those two ladies get along with Mama and the girls just fine. I think having two big pie tins of breakfast helped too. No pushing or shoving to speak of.

Cosette decided that she wanted to wash down some of those goodies with a little bit of scratch grains as well:

Not to be left out of all of the fun, Lisette was waiting patiently in the coop for her dish. Smart little girl that Lisette! Actually, she was sort of stuck up on the top shelf in the coop and was having a lot of second thoughts about jumping down off of there. Especially as Naughty Dottie was right there on the floor waiting for her to make one wrong move!

Maggie and Cosette eventually did join Lisette in the coop, but by that time, as luck would have it

my batteries in the camera crapped out!

They're in the charger now, so maybe I can get some more pictures later today.

Nick, was it you that wanted to see a picture of Maggie's wonderful olive egg? Here ya go!

By the way, the eggs in that basket represent about 36 hours of production!

Oh Cyn! I'm so sorry to hear about Dutch.

I really loved the looks of him. He was so noble and royal looking. A great boy has passed. Even if he did turn into a butt head towards you, he was still a magnificent specimen!

Amy,
Mike said to tell you they look great, and he is really pleased to see them. My oh my, those babies have grown! Mike was just reminiscing at how Maggie used to growl when he would take her off the nest to go eat something (when she was sitting). He used to worry that she wasn't eating. She was ferocious and would scream at everyone in the yard, letting them know she was there! She was always Alpha hen here. When she was sitting, no one ever got into her nest or bothered her. He wanted to make sure I told you all this .....

ETA: sheesh .... Mike said I forgot to tell you ..... Maggie's new feathers look great. Her molt did her well. She is a pretty little thing!

Some broodies make good sitters, and others ones make good mamas. Some can do both, and some can't. That's what I think anyway. When you change them around, do the hens accept the new chicks ok? Silly birds!

Serrin- Thanks for the pictures! They look great! And what a beauty of an olive egg.

Cyn I am SO sorry to hear that! That must be hard on you... I know you loved him. Feel better!
