Beth, I agree with you on the Char X Dairy. I had a Char cow I bottle raised that was my 4-H project...she took Res. Grand first year and then grand Champ for 3 years...she was a sweetie.

Cetawin, I LOVED that cross-they were pretty, AND tasted fine. Hey- ribbons like that are pretty darn good! Did you do anything besides cattle? There are times I miss 4-H. I have some nice memories of some county fairs-

I put Ultrasuede in with his Orp girls this morning for about 20 minutes. Fed treats. He tried calling them- but they are SO suspicious of him. So he gave up and ate with the girls milling around him.Silkie gave him major stink eye and tried to jump him. He whapped her, and then they all starting running around. He finally got really nervous about being separated from the rest of his friends, so I let him back in with the Dels. He'll get another dose of Orp Girl Dramatics this afternoon. Valentina looked like she would make friends, and perhaps squat- he tried a little dance for her, but Silk and Satin are not in that mind frame yet, and were getting in the way. Katia, who is head hen in there, could not make up her mind about him, so she ignored everyone.

Is it good to do small doses like that? Or should I just put him in there tonight and make him stick it out? He is SO attached to his Del girls.

Nellabean, you have a picture for everything!!!

Even if it is neither Jersey nor Charolais!

Can they see each other, when apart? This is what I have done, and been successful ..... I have them penned separate, but beside each other, so they see each other. I do this for a couple weeks. Then I let them all free range together for another week or so. Then I move them in together. Night time is a good time for the initial move.

Nope! No argument out of me. I just like the Guernsey's.

Both are excellent breeds, and Tim couldn't go wrong with either. Personally, I'd take any breed so long as it kept its production under 15 gallons total per day. One can only turn so much of that into cheese on a daily basis you know!

We knew some folks back in Olympia who had this amazing generational farm. Fred and Pat were 5th generation dairy farmers, and the love and dedication they had for their farm showed in every fat and happy cow, and every blade of grass.

The EPA, in its infinite wisdom [NOT!] shut them down after five generations in the same location for, get this, not being able to install a half million dollar abatement system to protect Medicine Creek from runoff from the farm. They said that the elevated nitrogen from the cows was killing the Nisqually delta further down stream!

Can you believe it?!?!? Fidiots! The reason the delta was so rich in aquatic life was BECAUSE of the farm!

Pompous arses! Just trying to justify their existence. And yet they allowed a 250 home development to take place on the hill side above the delta! HELLO!?!?!?! What about the run off from all of those rich turds and their golf course lawns??? No abatement system there!

Long story short, Fred had to remove all of his girls to his brother in law's farm up north in Monroe. It's heart breaking to see a grown man cry. Every single one of Fred's girls was a blue ribbon winner, and he knew every last one of them. All 250 [approximately] of them! Every single one of them had been born there on the farm. It was like watching a man have to sell off his much loved and much cherished children.

Have I ever mentioned how much I despise governmental agencies?

OK, rant over....we now return control of this conversation to cooler heads! Have a great day everyone!

Beth...re: 4-H...yes I did Beef Cattle, Equine (Barrels, team roping yada yada, swine, home ec stuff) I have some fond memories of all of the stuff, summer camp and a conference at the Univ of Florida where I spoke of Bovine anatomy, illness, diseases and treatments. I so wanted to Chy to get interested in 4-H...but nothing until she got her Milles...she is considering a poultry club so we will see.

RE: Ultrasuede...I have no idea what to advise...I could never separate Thor and Cannonball. He would be beside himself and she screamed and pitched fits whenever she was away from him. I just gave in and let them stay together and they were together when he died.

Well that is Buffalo Dung....the Nisqually delta is dying due to poor management of the Nisqually, several chemical issues NOT caused by farms. I hear ya, I am sick to death of the government sticking its big arse nose into everything in our lives. This Monsanto and their genetically altered foods is irritating the crap out of me...since when did Congress have the dammmmmd right to tell me what I have to eat? I missed that part of the constitution when I studied it. grrrrrrrrrr

Done now....

Don't get me started! Unfortunately, I really believe it will never change either. I believe we are doomed to leave our children and grandchildren in a nation of political turmoil and continuing government involvement making our choices for us whether we want it or not. It seems to me that it is too late ...... Look at Monsanto! They rule the politicians! They do, really ...... it will never change. They have the big bucks and they use it.

Aaaah, but ask yourself, where do those big bucks come from, my friends? Ultimately, they come from you and me! And there are a darned site more of us than there are of them. Unfortunately, we've all bought into the notion that we're just the little guy and can't fight city hall. BALLOONEY!!! You fight them with your pocket book! You fight them with your ballot. You fight them with your voice. You fight them by banding together. We did it two hundred and thirty four years ago....we could do it again. People just have to want it badly enough!

But, when you look at how apathetic society has become, it's no wonder than none of us have beaten our plowshares into swords. Blame it on drive thru windows and remote controls.

I totally agree with you! We COULD do it, but I just don't see it happening. How many people even use their right to vote? Much less than 50% I believe I read. It is sad how many just sit back and watch things happen. Most don't even have a clue what is going on (such as with Monsanto). Apathetic is the perfect word for out present society.
