Rnacher- I think I had 50 -50 and my one single little Del chick that my broody hatched out this summer is, I am fairly certain, a girl. I have Speckledhen babies.

I just wondered if the Delaware breed is prone to roos genetically speaking. Much they way some family lines throw all girls or all boys or more of one than the other.

I've just candled 7 eggs under my broody and two no good.

I suppose I wouldn't mind if I had a place to keep the roos til butcher time but I don't. My 4 WNY hens are getting older and have got to be replaced. If necessary I'll fire up the bator. DW will have a cow but then with the price of milk and my DD haveing a baby we could us a good cow.

Wonder if I could talk her in to having a heritage breed?

Course it'll have to stay in the garage.

He really is a sweetheart. You should just see him with the chickens. You would swear he was a true guardian. He watches over them, and appears to worry about them, too. I think he senses that we care about them, so he does too.

Now that is a thought! Talk about self sufficiency!

It just seems to me that I get alot more roosters in every breedI hatch or buy! Just my luck, I guess. Just like my luck with family ..... almost all boys. I lived with DH and 4 sons for many years before we had our daughter. It was like living in a men's locker room sometimes, too!

Grandkids are all boys, except one, too!

In the garage eh? Better make it a Guernsey then! Smaller than a Holstein and more productive, pound for pound, than Holsteins! Their lineage goes back several hundred years...I think that would qualify them as a heritage breed.

And ten times sweeter than Jerseys! Hey! If you're gonna have sweet chickens, shouldn't your cow be a sweetheart too???

ahem yes well I put red zip tie on 5 babies tonight that are leaving here going to you...3 splits and 2 lavender...I think one of the splits is a boy, the other looked girly to me. Your incubator is also already with scbatz' DH. Let me know what you think about my selection.

What...this is a Dellie thread only? hmmmm I did not think any Dellie threads were just Dellies.

I haven't heard from Sarah, to know what time to be there!

I will PM my phone number to her. You have my number. Tell her to call me, so I am there at the right time, please.

I will send her the number in a text message. I saw her DH last night about 8:00 and he was packing and so forth planning on leaving in the am... I will do what I can. Do you have her number?

Amy-I love you to pieces, but we are going to argue.

Jerseys are smaller than Guernseys, MUCH prettier, MUCH sweeter, and have a richer milk- I grew up on a dairy farm with Jerseys! I will defend them! They are the Delawares of the cow world!!!

Rancher needs a Jersey!
Seriously, the neighboring farm to the south had Guernseys and they were simply a brown/tan version of Holsteins in my eyes.
Oh, and we crossed some with Charolais (I can't remember the spelling, sorry) and got really NICE beef crosses.
