Oh yes, I accept a certain degree of culpability regarding the long phone conversations with each of you. I just wish I could get both of you fine ladies to understand that I ain't as young as I once was. I really do need my beauty rest, or I shall frighten and horribly scar for life, small children who may catch just a glimpse of me after a mere 2.5 hours of sleep!!

Awww come on LH! JoJo is just missin' her mama!! You can't hold that against her! She's the Diva, after all!! You need to reassure her that all is well in her little corner of the barn, and that you would be with her every moment of every day if only you could. Failing that, stuff an apple in her mouth and tell her not to be so darned demanding and ungrateful!

Thanks Beth!

We removed the splint from that chick this morning. It's hock is not right, but it is walking on the leg. It sort of bends forward at the joint rather than back, a classic slipped tendon. If it keeps walking and taking care of itself like it is now, perhaps the joint will get stronger. If not, we'll have to cull that baby as well as the one who hasn't stood up yet. They have AviaCharge in the waterer as well as got scrambled eggs this morning.

I dread the next Georgie babies to hatch. The ones on Day 18 are both Ellies and that one of June's. Saw June's egg rocking awhile ago. Hope it's another little Hedwig.

Cyn, I'm sorry that Georgie's chicks are having such a rough time of it.

I wonder...... Do you suppose it would do any good to exclude her eggs for about a month, in which time perhaps the trace elements part of her diet could be addressed, and then maybe run a test hatch to see if any more chicks suffer from this possible deficiency?

The AviaCharge sounds like it should be an excellent idea for the overall health and nutritional standpoint of the chicks. But, and I could most certainly be wrong here, it seems to me that the problem needs to be addresses before the egg is even formed.

Or is the AviaCharge powerful enough to help correct a problem after it exists, such as what you're facing with Georgie's chicks? Your thoughts?

Now you've got me to wondering about that batch of hooligans I hatched out last spring. Very few of them hatched without having issues of one sort or another with their feet. Mostly wonky toes, the kind that curve backwards in a semi-arc. Now I wonder if maybe the problem didn't stem from some deficiency in the parent stock diet. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest after closer inspection of the conditions that the owners of that flock keep their chickens in.

GeeGee's little goober has perfect toes by the way!

Nothing wrong with my girl's diet!

The tendon business is sad, I hope the little one makes it. If its a pullet and she can walk and lay, what the heck! Put her in a layers pen.

These will all be sold, though. I'm not keeping a single one of the Dels. Tasha is the last one I'll raise here to stay in the flock. I don't want anymore Delawares.

Yes, Amy, the issue is with the mother, but the Avia Charge and the Redcell given to the chicks were to see if adding biotin now would help the hock strengthen. William said it was worth a shot, but didn't have any idea if it would work at this point. If I wanted to hatch more eggs from Georgie, she'd have to be put on a nutritional program and that makes more work to do it for just one hen. So far, Ellie's have not had issues that I've ever been aware of, but if they do, then no more Del babies, even to sell.

If I know I'll be hatching from a certain separated group, I'll boost nutrition beforehand, like with the Game Bird Breeder or Show Bird pellets, plus extra vitamins and protein. Suede's group has gotten extra, trying to deal with the infertility in that pen, but it really could just have been the fluff issue.

Cyn, if little one makes it and is a girl...I will take her. A handicapped boy would not survive Lancelot and Severus but a girl would. If she is not in pain and can get around to eat and stuff on her own, I would give her a chance. Up to you, I trust your judgment. I will pay you $20 (or more if needed) for her, that should cover her food and care costs till May yes?

Okay, last night when I went to check on the Diva to make sure she was no going to founder on me, I snapped pics of her handywork LOL

The evidence of her patience and determination to unhook the chain....

The catch she had to squeeze and work out of the chain:

The forever goofy Casca, who in his bid to make sure mama was okay and guarded in her recliner, stole my blanket to make himself more comfy for guard duty...meanwhile mama woke up freezing.

How could I not feel better with such a loyal unselfish beast at my feet? *rolling her eyes*

You will not pay me a dime, m'dear. If it's a she and no one buys her, even if she's okay but a tad gimpy, you're welcome to have her.

Do not make me hide another $20 in your house somewhere (and forget where I hid it)

You need to make monies off these babies silly lady. I mean techinically I owe you because had you let me pay for the original eggs, I would probably not have gotten stuck with Cannonball....she would be normal but because you did not let me pay for them, look what I got stuck with???? A Goober.

PS: Regarding the infertility in Suede's pen....of course it was the butt fluff I have repeatedly said that his women are defective HE IS PERFECT! And everyone acts so surprised when I am right. Ha!

LH, That diva is something else, and smart too!!

Oh I meant to tell you [days ago] that I like the story of how you met your DH. That was so sweet. I met my DH on a Friday the 13th, in a bar. I had never been to a bar before and haven't been to one since

Dr. Hook was the band playing that night.

Thank you, Laura. I know that one will have to be culled. It's toes will not spread out at all and it cannot stand. It will sometimes eat and drink if feed is sat in front of it, but is not going to get anything on its own. The later malfunctioning chick can walk and is doing what's necessary to stay alive. The hock on that one was weak from the start, we think, due to it sitting much more than the others, and possibly one of them jumped on it while rough-housing and knocked it out of joint.

Still haven't found that $20 bill. Can't for the life of me figure where you put it, LOL.
