Sebright & Campine males should both be hen feathered. Long pointed saddle feathers in either breed is a disqualification.

Now there's something I didn't know. I saw some at the fair and thought they were nice looking birds and I might get some. I have to have another look at them there must have been a reason I didn't get them to start. Are they flighty? My chicken yard has only a 4' chain link around three sides and so far none of the birds has jumped it. But then I don't keep anything near the sides for them to use to get over it with. I only keep heavier dual purpose breeds. I do like the looks of the Campines though. They were some of the nicer looking birds at the fair.

Okay this confuses me. I have limited experience having only seen 4 campine roos in my lifetime...but they all had saddle feathers and were completely unrelated birds. I cannot imagine them not having saddle feathers being a larger fowl...the sebright okay (I have only seen two of those in person and honestly did not pay attention to saddle feathers because I was fascinated with their tail carriage).

Is there a good picture somewhere of a "show quality" campine that I could look at?

On the news of my new truck. The dealer just called and the rear axle is bent so a new one is ordered. I told them the axle was bent 10 days ago but they cannot listen to a woman. Then he tells me the thing is going to cost 497.00 for the part alone. I told him he was nuts, to get online with Chevy and order it for $218.00 for the entire rear axle and assembly. He looked online and said "Oh that's cool". But I am just a woman afterall why listen to me about my truck.

*sigh* So, hopefully my new axle will be here on Friday and on my truck Friday afternoon, if not then it will be next week.

I am going to go hug a chicken....I think D'artagnan or Spike will suit my hugging needs.

I have a single golden campine cockerel. He is super tall and leggy....very light. Bet he could clear 6 feet easily. He is lighter bodied than my andulusians were. Almost looks like a modern...might just be mine at the gangly stage. His name should be twiggy.

Here's what the APA Standard says: Campines posess a modified form of hen feathering, very long curved sickle feathers, side hangers or long profuse pointed saddle feathers constitue disqualifications." The ABA Standard, under Campine disqualifications states: "...long pointed sex feathers in back, saddle or wing bows."
Did you think I made it up? When I post about specific breed requirement I always check the Standard to make sure my memory's correct. In this case I didn't need to as hen feathered males are uncommon.
BTW: hen feathering in a male of any other breed is a D/Q.

ETA: look on feathersite.com for some pictures.

Raising chickens is nothing like raising kids. At least with chickens if they give you attitude you can wring their stinkin necks and eat 'em! It's been said mothers of teenagers know why animals eat their young.

I think I have some pics of the fair campines but I am NOT open to debating whether they are good or bad. They were pretty though.

Y'all have become rather an extended family to me now. And I can't imagine what I would do without ya some days. Just knowing that you're all out there, spread across this great nation of ours, gives me a sense of companionship and camaraderie that I've never found anywhere else. Long live BYC! Long may we be friends! And may all of your girls lay nice big beautiful eggs!

I would, but I always feel so far behind you all!

NYREDS of course I did not think you made it up...I was merely stating my confusion because I have never seen one that did not have the saddle feathers that looked primarily flowy like other roosters. I will check out the pics for sure.

I am going to check out my d'uccle boy tomorrow because I have not paid much attention to his feathering in the regard either and I am curious now. I love their low wing carriage though.

Oooooh....Golden Campines are awfully pretty....not to mention the chance of me selling a lone rooster like that is almost nil. I have been considering putting him out in 'the big yard' with the big flock...soon as i get back from Vegas i think i will throw him out there along with the itty bitty partridge cochin who is teeny tiny and causes no problems....Neat. Guess the feather footed roosters are going to have to share their ladies.
