So far, so good.

The broodies all got dunked in the bucket of water and were put into their new "Broody Buster" apartment. A few went to roost and stayed there most of the day. Others walked around aimlessly, looking around and clucking in despair. I hope this works!

Guess Dusty gets her Ice Dunk tomorrow--she's definitely broody, plucked and all. Darn it, why her? Well, why anyone, really? I don't need even one more chick around here.

ETA: Kathy, forgot to say I'm happy she's a bit better. Maybe a change of scenery will help her get over it.

Well, actually, she looked a tad bit better this morning. There is a local 4H boy that comes out every so often and gets chicks. He came out today. When I said I was gonna cull her, he and his mom asked if they could have her. SOOOOOOOO, she has been rehomed. Light as a feather and so very pale.

They also took a broody Silkie with a bunch of eggs, too!

Whoo hoo, wells thats something! I need to get up and make some scrambled eggs for mine.

I had an Ee that tried to go on me but I moved her to the Del side of the coop and she broke but not before I tossed her out door a few times. I have a Bantam leghorn that went and I took all (3) the chicks as they hatched and she seems ok.

Now I have to say that I sympathize but I would not use the term "High Water" if I was you.

BTW, I noticed i was short one CM hen this evening. I have no idea what happened except that either she got out of the yard or something got in and carried her off. The yard is fenced but the garden side is short due to the replacement of stockade and the back side isn't done yet.

also here he is. Henry Michael Palmer my new GS.

I'm headed down to TX to see him tues.

Forgot to ask. I have a hen from AL that could only be a splash but not much black in there. Very light if you recall. Now if I breed her to a black from Jody will I be able to get blues?

Claudia didn't have any lavenders and I thought that was the case but on further examination there are some touches, though not many of black. If you didn't know it you might say she was lavender but she is lighter, than my lavenders.

thanks

Well that's good to know cuz I've got two black roos and I was wondering what to do with her.

BTW the BR's are doing ok.

I've got three new Dels in the brooder cuz if I have to have a broody hatch chicks they better be dels, friz or Ee's. I figured I could get rid of the friz or ee's easily but that is not proving to be the case. I don't want to part with the dels though.

I expect if we're still here in the spring to be hatching an incu full of Dels, Lav orps, BO's and etc. etc in sucession.

Kathy,

Let me know how the water dunking thing goes....

I may try it next time around. I think my broody is getting close to being over it.

She is spending more and more time off the nest.... so I think she is losing the urge

I tried the water dunk once. It didn't work plus it seemed rather cruel so I only did it that once. They are so funny when you toss them out of the nest. They just flop right there. I swear if there was an egg on the floor they would just sit on it. I do wonder if the wooden eggs in the nest boxes might be encouraging them to brood. Any ideas on the matter?

My method is working! Today all the girls are outside in the pen, with the exception of one staying on the roost most of the time. There are no nests and no bedding in there at all. The water dunk and the new unfurnished quarters seems to be working.

Tim, they will set on anything! Golf balls, wooden eggs, or even AIR! I think you have to eliminate any nesting spot.
