Nicole, of COURSE you can - just add SDWD to your byline!

Good morning, Amy, you are up with the chickens!

Cetawin, how are you feeling?

Cyn, how is Maxie this morning?

Kathy, I think I like you better as a blond-

Actually, I'm trying to train myself to get up at OH Dark Hundred again for hunting season, which starts Saturday.

So far, I've only succeeded in calling into question my own sanity!

But the chickens are pretty gosh darn happy to see me so early in the morning.

FOOOOD!!!

Maxie is alive. DH brought her inside so I could massage her crop, which is doughy, a bad thing (been there, done that, lost birds to crop stasis during molt), but she is skin and bones, her feathers are exploding all over, new ones are trying to grow in, she has what feels like a huge concrete egg in her abdomen, etc. Not looking good for her at all.

This is NOT a good year for chickens. I think Valentina is down for good now, too- remember I had said she quit laying almost as soon as she started? Well, she is purple and very, very, quiet. Same hard feeling, Cyn, as Maxie - has lost weight, and this is just rotten awful!!!

No, not Valentina! Gosh, I can't remember if she's a Del or an Orp, I'm sorry! I lose track so easily lately. Well, crap, Beth. And you know, muddstopper picked up eggs from me and there were at least a couple from Maxie, so a month ago, she was laying. This came on very suddenly. Sometimes, there just isn't a thing to be done for those poor hens.

Well I am feeling okie dokie today thank you for asking Beth. I am sorry to hear about your girl, that is so sad.

I awoke to what looks like the remnants of a collegiate pillow fight in my coop. Almost like chickens walking around exploding feathers....so bad that the entire coop must be scooped out because I could not even begin to get to poo to clean out. So a 10 x 20 coop gets cleaned out as soon as the rain lets up.

Cyn...I am sorry Maxie is fading...those Dellies are so special and I will miss her screaming to the world when I am the phone.

DH and I ran up to the store and came back to pass out neighbors leaving on our tiny narrow road...as we neared the driveway there was a line of chickens coming up the road....MY CHICKENS! Seems they cannot distinquish truck from car, they only see white vehicle and tried following it...they follow me in the truck to the edge of the first gate on the paddock but they were following the neighbors little white car. While most people would have a dog that chases cars not me...oh no....I have a flock that chases cars.

And yes Cyn....Sumo chicken was in that pack of chasers too.

Another prime example of why NOT to let your flock free range.

Thanks, you guys. Valentina was a beautiful black orp that Kathy sent me for Ultrasuede's harem.
DH said he would do the merciful thing for me tonight if I wanted him to - gotta think on that one, as she looks pretty miserable.

A month seems so fast, but these internal issues are just horrible- I hope Maxie is more comfortable than Valentina - she doesn't even care if I pick her up, and usually she screams her head off, and she won't eat.

Cetawin, I am glad you are doing better, a clean fast healing is MUCH to be desired! And your flock loves you, why wouldn't they go off trying to be with you? You will simply have to sit down with some flash cards and show them the difference between vehicles.

Tim, I hope Frenchy lives forever!

Hey, are you all going to join the Del club? It's free membership for the first year at least - It wouldn't feel right if you guys weren't in it. I think it will be a nice combination of BYC and yahoo Del group people - you don't have to work or volunteer for committees or anything if you don't want to, but I would love to see all your names on the membership roster!!!

I have a few named chickens....but not too many. Stew #1, #2, #3 and #4. Mr Mottled the evil rooster. Those are all I can think of offhand. I named my first 2 chickens Stew and Crockpot as they were straight run and I figured my luck they would both be boys. Crockpot was a boy and went adios...Stew was a girl. RIR type. So she was Stew. And every red chicken after that was Stew #suchandsuch. Stew #2 came along soon after. and then I hatched out a group of RIR chicks and kept Stew #3 and Stew #4.

Stew #2 is my favorite

Likes to visit me

My dad is visiting and was working out back. Last night at dinner he said "which chicken has an orange band with a #2 on it?" STEW#2, I said. "she followed me around all day! Came in the garage if I was in there, and I had to shoo her out of the back when I was putting gas on the mower".

She is such a friendly chicken.....always the first to run over when I go out and will jump up to take treats from my fingers. I can also pick her up and carry her around no problem. I will be so sad when/if something happens to her. When my dad was asking which chicken had the orange #2 band, my breath caught a bit as I was afraid he was going to say the hawk got it.

Flash Cards? hahaha great idea Beth. DeDe stole a whole sausage out of the hot dog bun I had fixed for DH...he was huggin me bye bye and by the time we got over to the truck I noticed the bun empty and said "Hone where is the sausage?"...just then DeDe, being chased by 12 others, ran by with this huge sausage hanging from her beak.
