Hey I saw those same call duck pen photos the other day somewhere....I have decided to build a duck BROODER that mimics those.....because brooding ducks sucks. That would be the perfect brooder for the little monsters.

Why do I need a duck brooder? Because my Welsh Harlequin have finally started laying! I am on whopping egg #3 for the girls. Obviously only 1 is laying so far....the other 2 will start eventually I'm sure. Neat, neat ducks. Don't plan on doing anything with them until next spring, but that gives me the winter to build the "brooder".

I didn't check on the rooster before work this morning, but he was looking okay yesterday. He is bald now and his face and comb are all bloodied and torn up. But he immediately started eating when put into the brooder and was roosting last night. When he "recovers" I will throw him out into the big yard instead of the rooster pen.

I have a whole 4 roosters in my big 16x24 rooster pen. What a waste! I need to swap them into the 8x8 pen for now. Which currently has a group of small babies. WHERE CAN I PUT THEM? lol Um.......I think i am going to throw them all out into the big yard except for the 3 bantam cochins who are teeny tiny...maybe they will go into a garage brooder? Sigh. Need more pens.

My poor little poodle........she has been smelling worse and worse. She has always been a "stinky" dog but over the last week she has smelled horrific. Well, I went to shave her yesterday and her mouth is disgusting. Rotten teeth big time. she has always had a "stinky mouth" but her teeth looked fine. She is an old dog and I've only owned her a few years so hard to say what her dental "status" was prior to that. All I know is that I was completely HORRIFIED when I looked in her mouth yesterday. I can't even explain how disgusting it was. Poor dog. I was quoted $400 to remove a single broken tooth from my cat a few months ago, not included the bloodwork that was "required" for surgery. So I called a new vet this morning and have an appointment for wednesday afternoon. I am hoping they will see how horrible it is and want to do it the next day. Yuck.

Well, my weekend sucked. LOL. HOW 'BOUT YOURS?

My old dog is getting a bit smelly in her old age, too. We bathed her and all her bedding and now, there it is again, that smell. Like my parents' old poodle smelled when she had a skin condition, but Kes doesn't. Her teeth have plaque, but this isn't from her mouth. Ick and double ick! She is 13.

Mine is named Bella....and we call her Smelly Belly.....poor thing has always smelled back. But this is HORRIFIC. Like, the smell is so bad I can barely stand to be in the room with her. Hopefully they can just pull all her teeth and she will be back to smelling like...uh....roses?

My other "old dog" smells normal. He's old, he doesn't smell like baby powder and sunshine......but not like Smelly Belly. Ugh.

Nella, ick to rotten teefers!

Glad the roo seems to be doin alright! Poor guy!!

Cynthia, hows Maxie doin? She alright after stuffing herself yesterday?

Kathy-those are GREAT!!!! I'm thinking those would be doable for some of the other ducks we're thinking of housing...hmmm......

Beth-Actually, I used nylon halters on horses not pastured. But, the hazard of that when they roam around, pastured or in a yard, is if they catch on something, its not going to break away like leather would. I've seen a few nice horses shred thier faces up from that
hit.gif
LOTS of $$ paid in vet bills, ouch. They also make (or used to anyways) Breakaway halters, with just a leather crownstrap. Cheaper then goin all leather, but with the wash and wear advantage of nylon

I got all that done myself...DH has been workin like a dawg at his regular job, so I took it upon myself to get it started

Still got a long ways to go though

Today is sorting day. Gotta get the cows up to the shoot pen so we can sort sale/no sale and ear tag the keepers... Gonna be a lotta work. Hopefully everything goes smoothly

Forgot to comment on the halter issue. I have one of those breakaway half nylon half leather halters. I put it on my looney tune if she needs to wear a halter "longterm" for some reason. She doesn't tie well so she would kill herself if she ever got caught on something. Pull-back queen of the world
wink.png
The "half" halter is old and probably half rotted, so would definitely break before her neck did.......I also put a tag on it with my phone number in case she gets loose. She did get loose once at the barn and almost made a grand break......I literally drove in to visit her as she was nearing the gate to the road........poor barn owner had been trying to catch her for a while but she is NOT EASY.

I drove in. Pulled over and got out with a halter/lead and carrots....caught her....handed her back to the barn owner to walk back, and followed in my car. Definitely an interesting day.

Perfect!!!

We've decided to take the day off to give the deer a chance to settle down after all of the hunter pressure from the weekend. [yeah right...what hunter pressure? we never saw one single hunter on the private land.

] Truth be told, DH and I aren't spring chicks any more and we needed a day off. Plus, we have all of that work to get done so that Mama EE and her darling daughters can come live with us ASAP!!!

I can hardly wait!! I can hardly wait!!!

So, having slept in to the decadent hour of nearly 8AM, it's time to get my little butt in gear and get out there! Those poor sweet boys of mine have probably waited long enough to get outside. They're such good boys!

Of course we're proud of Ultra Suede, Beth!!! What a great rooster man you have there and you have every right to be proud of him!! Don't you just love watching your boys do what they are supposed to do? Finding yummy things for their girls to eat. Defending their flock from all comers, both predatory and domestic! [other roo's

They're just such a delight to watch period. Sure beats the heck out of anything on the boob-tube!

OK, time to go! Those chickens ain't getting any younger!

Y'all have a wonderful day. I plan on it!

Beth...well there are no worries as long as Joleta has a halter to lead her by I am good. I will measure her and get her a new leather halter...I was actually considering ordering her a nice Arabian style halter. Even though I am in the horse capitol, the focus here are Thoroughbreds, Walkers, Saddlebreds and Standardbreds...I can order one and have it here faster than I can snoop around and find one here. I am just such a nervous ninny having seen some horrible accidents and a fatality due to nylon halters...she will get a paddock halter for sure

Janelle that fly mask is perfect. lol

Maxie seems okay. On the other hand, my other serious molter, Nelda, has an impacted crop which is also soured, it seems. What is it with their molts and crop issues????
barnie.gif
We have Nelda in the broody pen below Zane with only yogurt in a bowl and ACV in her water. If it doesn't go down some by tomorrow, we may have to empty her crop surgically. Why, why, why?! Nelda is my only truly speckled hen.

Oh Cyn!

Not another girl with bad crop issues!?!
sad.png
I'm so sorry.

Ummm....you will teach me how to do this procedure as well, won't you??
bow.gif
One can never know too much about such things, in case, God forbid, it should happen to any one of our chickens. I sure wish and pray it would STOP happening to your babies, Cyn. You've had much more than your share!
hugs.gif
I'll be keeping Nelda and Maxine both in my prayers, along with you and Tom.

barnie.gif
Not Nelda! Dang it..these molts are horrible! I have two of my girls under watchful eyes but not separated yet...they are just acting "off" and they are both nearly naked from this molt. *sigh*
