Just like human families having some sweet people and some butt-heads; so do chickens. I got all the sweetness and angelic genes in my stock. Sorry for the rest of you.

Emily is definitely broody--she did pluck her breast feathers, but she keeps pushing or letting the eggs roll out from under her. I removed the two EE eggs so maybe she will be more comfortable with just five. She'd rather sit on my DH's hands when he reaches into the Firetower to rearrange her eggs, LOL. She came out, pooped bigtime and then went back in and ate and drank, at DH's urging, then is back on the eggs. It will be a miracle if these hatch.]

Took Nelda out in the garden in full sun. She flared her hackles then sank onto her side in the warmth, like she'd always do with a sunbath. She was breathing very slowly, laying on her side, then jumped up and walked out of the hottest area. Never opened her eyes. She refuses to drink, period, even with dripping water on her beak-it looks like she clamps her mouth shut on purpose. She is very dehydrated and I can't do an IV, obviously, so she will just pass on soon. I keep telling Tom we need to put her down, but he says every time he does that, he feels like he loses a little part of himself. No amount of logic, telling him it's for her, will fix that. I may have to do it myself, I guess.

*pulls on her hip waders* Of course you did Kathy *choke cough cough* Both of mine are angels too...they never get into trees, on the porch swings, steal your food, walk the porch railing...nothing like that....perfect angels *choking*

Angels? Angels? Did I hear someone calling MY Delawares????? HMMMM??????

Cyn, I am mentally holding your hand and hugging you; help Nelda along if she needs it - dehydration is painful, from what I hear.

Ugh, I definitely have FOUR broodies on my hands. FOUR. It is the middle of October and I have 4 broodies! A white silkie, a buff columbianx bantam cochin, a white leghorn/giant and now a RIR/Cochin hen. Son of a gun, that RIR/Cochin was hatched out with the White Leghorn/Giant.....so she is also 33 weeks old! What the heck!

I pulled the silkie and Cochin/RIR girl off their wannabe nests and tossed them in the coop....again.....tomorrow morning I will toss the shredded rooster out to the yard and then move both girls into brooders. I only have 4 garage brooders right now. And 4 broodies plus a batch of chicks. What to do, what to do......LOL. I guess I need to bring the broody hutch back out....in the middle of October. Whose idea was this?!?!

FOUR broodies???? OMG, I do sympathize! Dang, what timing.

Originally I had intended to do no hatching this winter ...... BUT, when these Heritage Barred Rocks start laying, I AM going to incubate them. And, thanks to you, Nella, I have brooder plans in hand!

And, I have my storage garage all cleaned out and ready to mess up.

I actually had 8 or 9 broodies at a time during spring. Crazy darn hens. Maybe I should change my name to BROODYLAND.

I'm so excited to see you build a brooder! LOL. I looooove building. I have no plans at all this weekend....maybe I will build something too. Maybe I will build another brooder unit

I very regularly troll google images and steal pictures of awesome brooders, cage, multi-cage units, etc etc. I have huge amounts of them. Anybody want a zip file of them? Sometimes I just like the look or the way they did the doors or something....just keep them to give me ideas. I could email you a zip file of them if you want

*Waving hand in the air* ME, ME, ME ! ! ! I want the files! I LOVE plans and I love construction work, as well. My father was an expert carpenter and taught his 4 daughters a little bit ...... enough to get by, anyway!
