Amy, that is one beautiful EE hen you have now! Congrats on your pretty new addition!

Kathy, the mites/lice issue is a tough one to resolve. I count on my Orange Guard (orange oil based safe pesticide from ACE) saturating all crevices/cracks when I do a clean out to keep any bugs from setting up housekeeping and DE in all the nests on a regular basis. They do major dust baths, too. I don't know what would happen if I had that bad of an issue like that woman has. The best thing is prevention, of course, which is what I've done since the get-go. The only bird who has ever had pests here was my beloved Hawkeye, who came with a nice collection of lice, eradicated by a major dusting with DE and bedding with DE sprinkled all over it. Never saw any after that.

Mites and lice are a weird one. I've had it pop up off and on, here and there, on certain birds. Other birds are never affected. Even prior to me ever adding any extra birds I had it pop up on my original batch once. I think its just "around" sometimes. A healthy dustbath does seem to help the birds out quite a bit. I'm also a fan of putting some poultry dust in the new bedding.....since the birds always want to dustbathe in the bedding once you change it.

I do think a lot of things are solved by reducing numbers as well, sad to say. Having 100 birds can be overwhelming, especially once a health problem pops up. She would do a lot better to have 20 birds...........I would do a lot better to have 50 birds. Anyone want some layers? Some bantam cochins? ANYTHING?

Good Morning Humans Owned By Delaware!

First....Amy that is a great looking little family you have acquired Enjoy them...

SnowHunter....your kids are already goners...you can see the dellie mind control fix in their eyes. Make sure you check all their homework because there could be all sorts of sporadic notations like

"play with the Dellies" "Sneak the Dellies green beans" "hold the Dellies" "take a Dellie to school" "Hide a Dellie in my room"

Janelle...scroll back I have your expert opinion woman.... ahem

Kathy, that post is heartbreaking...however, maybe she could contact a local boy scout troop...some of the older boys should be in need of earning some carpentry and construction badges. That is free labor.

Woman, scroll back and see where I asked you how big the coop was and suggested either hanging metal cages or a brooder setup like Kathy is doing........so it will not take up any floor space. Not sure how big they would need to be, without knowing how big your coop is. If they are only sleeping there, they can be small. IF they are going to spend full days there often, they need to be big. If they are only gonig to spend the random day here and there in there, I would go reasonable. Maybe 2x3 for a pair and 2x4 for a trio....with a roost the full width of each cage....If I do things like that, they tend to spend a lot of time on the roost......or half on the roost, half on the floor.

Janelle the coop is 10' x 20'. The coop is going to be divided into three sections...as follows

Layer Pen - 6' x 10'

Orps cochins and Dellies 8' x 10'

Bantam area 6' x 10'

does that help?

I was thinking 3' x 5' cages 18" - 24" tall even as high as 32" - 36" stacking them and placing side by side with floor space for play area.

The brooder thingy may work...they only days they would spend in there would be bad weather days. so maybe 3' x 4' would work yes?

I would go with a stacked two level of smaller coop/pens. If its only for "here and there", they really don't need to be very big. If you made them 3 feet deep, along one 10' wall. Stacked two high (like the brooders). You could have four cages that are 3'x5'. That is very close in size to my brooder shed which is a huge area for a bantam pair or trio. I kept a large fowl quad in there for a good 45-60 day quarantine last winter. I would go ahead and make a few extra areas. Maybe instead of 4 that are 3'x5'.....make 6 that are 3x3'. Then you have an extra couple for injured birds, broodies, or whatever else you bring home next. Where are you going to put the buff columbian pair, hmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Okay best get more specific with you... ahem okay here goes

This is coop:

There were the double doors are is their space. It is 10' wide and they will hav 6+ feet deep inside. The left door can open but is locked stationary at all times except for cleaning. So inside door, there is a 6' wall to the left but to the right is that left window you see in the first pic. But I can put cages in front of the stationary door if I need or want to.

I meant to tell Cyn about this on the phone earlier but I forgot....If you guys do not follow the thread about talking in your sleep...it is hysterical but this is a sure sign I need rest...LOL

Here is my post from that thread:

I am sure that anxiety from the soon delivery of my new horsey and not resting well with this sinus infection brought this one on last night...

Apparently *ahem* around 4 am this morning, I sat straight up in bed and shook my husband silly while yelling at him "Have you gone mad? You cannot eat the horse's food ... Stop That!" Then I fell over top of him never waking up.

He said this morning over coffee "Honey, I think I will go find some horse feed for breakfast don't worry about my plate" and I was like "What? What are you talking about?" then he told me.

HAHAHAHA yeah I need rest.
