I had 3 broodies (various breeds) hatch on the same day. I gave them all away ... the broodies and the chicks. I was simply overwhelmed at the moment. Now I wish I had a few of those chicks back. LOL I am sure I will have more. I still have the Light Sussex mama ..... she is a good sitter, and a BAD mama. She was done with the chicks in less than a week.

seriously.....they're ALL ROOSTERS. massive legs, very poorly feathered, tall and 'roostery'

there us 1 maybe. the rest are roosters.

so, of 20 chicks:

1 maybe
6 roosters
13 unknown

I watched the Silkie coop today. I think the one laying is the broody mama. She kept nesting, and later I found an egg (in the run). Dang, I wish I knew for sure. If it is her, she will likely lay but a few eggs, and then go broody again. I really think the other 4 are all girls though. I put Silver back in with them, and he is the only one crowing and busy taking care of watching over them all. No rooster fights or problems.

i have my own way of sexing chicks.....wait til approx 1-2 weeks and then take the obvious boy (there is always one) and find the most likely girl (feathering, head shape, leg thickness) and then i grade all others based on them. very accurate that way.........should be able to start on these newest chicks this weekend or next week
