I'ts hard work being a genius....

Also, I did finally get to see that pix that Kathy posted. Definitely a neat idea. I don't have anywhere to put one, so boooooo......not to mention *ahem* with all my downsizing, I don't *need* one.

Fabulous deal there, Nick!

Candled the 5 Delawares in Set #2. One quit so there are 4 left. That one had a weird floating detached aircell anyway, so I was expecting it to be a quitter. Going into Day 19 with the first 7 Delaware eggs and the 3rd group is on Day 5 tomorrow.

A couple of things you might like to know about "plastic". It does not "breath" and condensation is a worry as chickens do and their breath is humid. Also plastic gives off a gas that you can not see without the right equipment. It dries out. If I could show you the milk jugs I use in my garden they are all brittle and breaking apart. You should have seen them breaking apart as the snow from the snowblower hit them as they hung on the fence post. I'll have lots to clean up some spring.

While I understand the mite business, you can expect to have to replace the plastic coop at some point and time. This is why you don't see to many plastic antique lawn chairs. And I will mention plastic is not biodegradable.
There was an article in the Practical Poultry magazine on plastic coops but there was no mention of it's durability as they are new and there is no evidence on how long they will last.

Just some food for thought

Thanks, Rancher. That's great advice, I think I'll go with the Craigslist wood.

Nick....get the incubator and hatch your own chicks!

BTW - I'm with Beth on the plastic coop. Very cute, but the sun will tear it apart in no time at all...

I agree to hatch your own, much better than hatchery, unless you buy from me or wait for me to get desperate and am selling them for a buck a piece. Heck if you lived near me I'd give you eggs to hatch. What are friends for? Anything to increase the Delaware population.

Is there anyone close to Gainesville GA that could help a feller out with some decent Delawares? They don't have to be show stock, just decent and healthy.

Trust me, I want to! But I keep my chicken addiction on a budget and just can't afford it.
