Cyn, I'm gonna go ahead and add my voice of encouragement to what others have already said. Let Ike be with the ladies. It's his whole purpose in life. To deny him that is to deny him the life he is meant to lead. I think your plan to do a complete deep coop cleaning is probably your very best option to get under control whatever is causing these problems.

You mentioned putting down fresh shavings and straw..... I was doing some reading awhile back about straw, and you just might want to rethink that aspect. I wish I could remember which university the article had been from. But, in a nutshell, it spoke about the incidence of bad microbes found in straw bedding being higher than that found in pine shavings. Just a little food for thought. If I can find that article again, I'll definitely forward it on to you. It was really rather disturbing.

For some reason, [I think they said it was due to the cellular structure and composition of straw] it is more prone to harboring disease.

Of course, Ike is added to my prayers for a speedy recovery. I just cannot imagine your flock without him.

Let's hope that he can make it through to autumn. Cooler weather may be just what the doctor ordered for Ike and your flock!

Lady hawk i an mo expert but you sure those arent leghorns? Look kind of " racey" looking!

Cyn i hope your cleaning goes well - did that very thing on my rock coop this weekend - and AMY dont freak me out! My main laying barn is way too big to use shavings on has to be straw! No problems to date - knock on wood - but they are out in the pasture most of the day so only in there at night and at the 3pm siesta time

If I remember correctly it will depend on a couple things:

1. Whether you use a BR cockerel or pullet....one carries 2 barring gene copies, the other carries only one.

2. Whether the "white" bird is dominant or recessive white (and I am totally NOT remembering which one is which, sorry), plus a white bird can be "hiding" genes that are not outwardly expressed.

Sorry for the long way of saying IDK.....

Weather is MUCH better here today (Cyn, hope yours is too!!). Only going to be 85F with little to no humidity.....this morning was wonderful, almost a hint of "fall" in the air

Got Dd out there to take pics with her new camera while I took the queen for a walk. It's raining today but we survived.

Each panel is 50" x 16' so the coop is just a little over 8'x9'. You can of course use as many panels as you wish. The coop is covered on three sides with 1/2" hardware cloth and the tarp. The back is covered with T1- 11 type siding. It has two doors so I can add a run on each side. You can see the roost row three of the pics. I intend to add another up higher. They've yet to use the roost. I like the design because I think it will be easy to clean. And the runs can be made bigger and will be. They can also be alternated to hopefully keep the grass growing. You can see the zip ties that hole the hardware cloth to the panels. I intend to cover the run with chickens wire since they will not be left inside it at night. You can also of course surround the bottom with hardware cloth to keep preds and vermin from getting under it. I have a few pricker and wild roses growing so I will cut them and push them under the coop as further deterrent. The snow will slide off easily I understand. For the coop.

2 cattle panels $44. 2 rolls of hardware cloth 48"x25' $138, pressure treated 2x4's $12 6 non pressure treated 2x4's $12 approx 8 2x3's $16 Plywood floor 3 4x8' $36 zip ties at 99 cent store $4 . Staples and screws $10-15. Misc pieces of cull lumber approx $10 or less. Tarp $33. 2 4x8' T1-11 $45 About $360 for the coop. Plus blood, sweat and tears. Ok tears are optional.

If you start in the early spring and buy things each month that helps defray the financial cost. I bought some of the stuff each month. Some I had. I buy cull lumber at HD all the time and save it for future use. Culls are usually 50 cents to $1 each. You can use all kinds of pieces of hardware cloth just zip tie in place. The chickens wire I'll use for the run is left over from my previous two runs. Small pieces of left over hardware cloth will go around the bottom. Forgot the hinge cost but you can pick these up at the flea markets and save.

Hey Scott thanks for the info! LOL

I meant to say thanks as to your suggestion to call consumer affairs - i got Nissan to pay for the part to fix my car and half the labor! THANKYOU! You saved me a bunch of cash! I owe you!

Tim that looks great.

Knox...they are not leghorns pretty sure I am thinking white rocks....they have yellow legs, smaller combs and body is more rockish. Trying to catch a good pic of them

the whole white thing confuses me...I had a trio of partridge silkies and got a solid white chick from them...something about recessive white...who knows. LOL But you can see her in that picture of Nutmeg and the lavender d'Uccle above.

Edit....I caught the little cockerel trying to mount one of the pullets so they could be older....I am just not sure.
