Kathy, this is all your fault...or, at least, your Marans hen's fault. I seem to have a broody. My BR, Dottie, is clucking, guarding a nest, and has plucked herself. Noticed the plucked underside a couple of days ago when I reached under her, but she didn't cluck or flare up at me so I didn't really pay much attention. She did both of those this morning so if she stays on the nest tonight, it's official. Gee whiz, I need more chicks around here like I need a hole in the head!

Took a couple of pics awhile ago. Isn't Riley beautiful?

Redheaded Rita, who hatched from a blue Ameraucana egg and is 1/2 BLRW-talk about confused genetics! But she is the sweetest thing and a great layer.

Caroline-I am going to put one of her eggs under Dottie if I let her sit. She was having trouble swallowing this morning and I was afraid she was going to choke. Seems to have worked it out, but she is 5 1/2 now and I've only had one bird from her, Glenda, sired by Suede.

Big Ida with her faux leather saddle:

Maretta, Gideon's and Mariah's mother.

Riley is very beautiful, yes!

Well, ya know..... it is good to know Dottie has "the broody gene!"

Alot of people ask about that when expressing an interest in the "heritage" breeds.

WOOO HOOO.... GO DOTTIE ! ! !

Though I don't need more chicks, it's true that a heritage breed needs to reproduce on its own so seems Dottie is doing what she ought to do. She is my first ever BR to go broody, though I've had BR crosses, like Panda, brood.

Dottie is a sweetheart-she flared and clucked, but didn't peck me. If she stays on the nest tonight, will probably set her up in the broody pen tomorrow with one each of Caroline's, Ellie's, maybe Nugget's and one of the blue Rock's for a DelaRock-maybe I'll get another blue barred bird like Riley, minus the beard.

Oh My Ida is still not happy about that saddle...she looked so positively hateful about it when you fought her and put it on....I still see some stink eye there Cyn.

Maretta is so purty and her daughter, little Mariah is absolutely precious!

I really need to get some pics of Jet, Mrs. Fluffy and the three chicks they are co-brooding. Both of those girls brood the babies. Mrs. Fluffy's experience is a good thing because she has taught Jet how to be an excellent mama too. Mr. Fluffy has taught Loki how to be a great dad so those three little silkie babies have 4 parents watching over them at all times. Silkies really are awesome that way I am finding.

Kathy...let me know what Brett says about the silkies. See I told you that you should have sent them all to me dang it. When I want a roo I cannot get one so I bet he has all boys. hahahahahaha

Dottie is in the broody pen, as of last night, with 4 eggs, one each of:

Del x Buff Brahma (Caroline)
Del x Blue Rock (Neela)
Delaware (Ellie)
Blue x RIR/BuffOrp (Meg, of course)

Hopefully, at least two will hatch so she can complete the cycle and also, not have a lone chick. Hope against hope that Meg's is fertile, as well as Caroline's. No idea what a Del x Buff Brahma would look like, other than a pea combed Delaware with feathered legs and gold leakage.

Yup, true heritage Barred Rock, as it should be, broody on eggs. The only Rock here to ever brood was the Black Rock, Emily, but she abandoned three different batches of eggs, two of them about Day 16-17, and she will never be allowed to brood again. No BRs have ever gone broody, hatchery or progeny of hatchery, either one.

These Canada Geese are getting smart. Ya know, I yell for Tyson, and get him to chase them out of the yard. I have been doing this for a week now. Now, yesterday and today, I walked out the door and saw them...... I yelled, "Tyson!" The geese immediately flew off...... without Tyson even doing anything! They hear me yell and they know what is coming!

I just wish Tyson would chase them off without me having to tell him to!

Damnable Canada geese!

Maybe you should record your voice on a loop yelling for Tyson, LOL.

Gideon! He's so mild mannered, he's getting beat up by a bantam pullet who is half his size, though, of course, she's 3 weeks older than he is.

Gideon's tormentor, Mina the Terrible:

And our new designer pocket pet, the Coch'Anver, in a fashionable shade of lavender. I don't know if this is Opal or Misty because I cannot tell them apart yet:

And, Dru, the lovely daughter of Dottie and Rex:
