Those are Black Copper Marans.

My broody Marans is DONE hatching! She killed 4 chicks that were half out of the shell, and one that was totally out (and a beautiful light blue or a splash). She has ONE chick..... it came from a Marans egg and is a Barred chick (dot on head).

Laura, I, too, was going to name a hen "Shug". From Color Purple.

All those hens-cramming-in-the-nest pics are really funny. Yes, they always want the same nest.
I set up something that worked. I have a broody, and put another nest behind her, so the other hens think they're in the same nest but they're not. They are all laying in that back nest, LOL

She just hatched that one yesterday. I threw out the other eggs (she was off of them) and the dead chicks today.

She is a first time broody................... AND, last time!

Cheyenne has officially ruined Isaac. He walked up to Tom who was resting on the hammock after some treecutting today, scratched his jeans with his foot, asking to be picked up. He's been CUDDLE-IZED!

((forgive the condition of his hackles. Tiny picks them all off, poor rooster. If it isn't his Delaware cannibal women, it's the Terrorist))

Karen, I feel for you with your Polish pullet. It's a very hard decision. At least, Zane could maneuver himself around using his one good leg and wings for crutches. Of course, his handicap was due to an injury.
