OK, my son NOW wants a SQ seabright hen...I need more info on this breed....my son is 10 and needs a sweet, loving bird....any info you can share will help!

most Sebrights are quite wild and dont like to be handled.

i had a hen that would chase you away from her eggs....... they are small but quite fearsome protectors of their eggs and chicks.the roos are also small, but kinda gamey too.

Sebrights are a nice breed to pick from. While they are flighty at times, they can be quite loveable depending on how much you hold them as chicks. A quick warning though, they can fly VERY WELL. Mine are very nice. When I try to get one to hold it they will run away except for a few who barely try. Once I hold the wild ones though they start to quiet down and sometimes fall asleep. Sebrights are very tiny though. If you are looking for SQ Sebrights, I would recommend SundownWaterfowl for SQ Silver Sebrights. As for Golden Sebrights and Buff Sebrights, I don't have a clue. I do not handle my sebrights much and they are totally wild. I would imagine that handling them regularly could calm them down although I find that even the chicks tend to be more flighty. I did once see a kid doing showmanship with a sebright and was amazed how still the bird sat for him. Perhpas I have forgotten how diligent children can be! Be very careful when you are looking for quality as there are so many people out there selling birds that are supposed to be SQ but are loaded with faults. The huge Ohio show would be the best opportunity to find some very good birds as well as see what they are supposed to look like.

My young boys picked sebrights to show in 4H. I regret that I didn't do any research on this breed. They are certainly very beautiful, but NOT docile and sweet compared to other possible breed choices you could make. They are definitely hyper and high maintenance. They DO also fly very well. We paid loads of attention to our brood when they were chicks, and they DID get tamed, but by comparison to other breeds, they were still somewhat wild. We could almost never catch them when they got out. They were bossy to other breeds as well. I would say if you are looking for something "sweet and loving" for a 10 year old, definitely try something else. I know 10-year olds and this age group would not put in the time necessary to make this bird a sweet pet. Try a Mille Fleur D'Uccle if you are looking for a super sweet bantam. Good luck!

Hi Dixiechick, I have some SQ Golden Sebrights for sale if you want to make a day trip over to Milton, Florida in the Panhandle. I currently have five pullets and five cockerels that are from July hatchings.

They are flighty and fly like pigeons. Also, the roosters can be nasty.

Talk him into a Serama instead. They like people and are nice and small and cute.

Old English Game Bantams are very very tame chickens. My girls love to be held. They come right over and sit down in your hand.
