searching for a rooster

Quote:
No, it's not a problem. There are some very pretty roosters to choose from! So far my favorite rooster was a Cuckoo Marans. If you click on my BYC page, scroll to the very bottom and there is a story about him.

You never can be sure how docile roosters will be but a lot of times the following breeds have been docile for me:
Cochins, Wyandottes, New Hampshires, Silkies, Marans, and mutts.

I have had some trouble with the following roosters:
D'uccles, orpingtons, barred rocks, and some game fowl.

What hatchery are you ordering from? It makes a difference. I found out that some hatcheries have a rep for particular breeds being aggressive. For example barred rocks from McMurray. Nasty tempers-lovely flavor.
But of all the breeds I have had roos in my Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Crimson, is my favorite. He is big, beautiful, nice to us and the girls, but still watchful and protective. He also was uniquely uninterested in the macho competitions my other boys engaged in. He is secure enough in his rooster-ness that he feels no need to stomp and prance and crow constantly. He skipped the teenage phase my other boys went through (some never grew out of) and I never ONCE considered eating him, unlike most of the others.
If you can bear the thought of eliminating some, I am really glad I decided to get straight runs. I got cheaper chicks, and was able to audition several roos and select the best.
