Sebastopol geese - selecting breeding stock, color genetics, and color improvement

Pics
I think you got the wrong impression...I just meant if you wanted to sell them as "Sebastopols" which was what you originally asked correct? There's nothing wrong with cross breeding geese. I just meant if you wanted to breed and sell sebastopols throwing an African in there might produce traits you or your buyers don't want like the the big knobs, dew laps, big size etc. all of which can skip generations then pop up later.
Ok, I get you. I can see what you mean. If I were to breed for a different color then I would be better off with something like an American Buff since the characteristics are closer to the Sebastopol then an African. Luckily my African has a very small dulap and not such a huge knob, thankfully but it is there. Definitely has a good personality which I like.

Cry, if you are going for color in the sebastopols there are pleny of colored sebbies out there for you to choose from. I understand that the geese did their own thing. But this happens if you have different breeds running together. This is why you keep different breeds penned in different areas.

Yes it is better to go to a breed that is very close to the type of sebbies. We do not want dewlaps on sebbies and they already have them from DH using dewlaps to get color in sebbies. Hopefully you can find lovely homes for your african/sebbie crosses.

If you are interested in color I have a Smooth breasted lavender gander for sale. He is a 2012 hatch and from woolfarm...

Thank Ruru but I am going to sell the baby geese. I'm not happy with the 8 month old boys because they have now kicked out the male sebbie and that's just acceptable....

I didn't expect any eggs last year since the geese were so young. The male sebbie couldn't quite figure out how mating was done even though he practiced he just couldn't get it right. This summer he got it figured out with the African but not with the American buff or the 2 female Sebastopols. Now that the 8 month old boys have it figured out it's time for them to go since I don't want African geese. Or I should say African crosses.

I'm happy with what I have at the moment. It's good to see what happens as I go which has been a good learning experience for me. I love how all the geese care for the babies. Just amazing. Also, my area doesn't have many geese so I'm sure I will have no problem finding them new homes which is good.

Aspen,

Why don't you breed the females to a good curly male and the males to a good curly female. Then you can take the best offspring from that and breed them back together. You should get some goslings from the later breeding that have the tufts and you can go from there.

If you get a quad of good curly whites and seperate and mark all the babies you should have no inbreeding problems and the generation that has the tufts should have well diversified genes and you can proliferate from there.
Jean, thanks for the advice. : ) That a sounds like a good plan. I only have 1 curly white Sebbie gander, he'll already have two colored Sebbie girls with him. Do you think two more females would be an overload?

Good luck finding homes for your babies. : )

Question, when you breed curly to curly and keep doing so cant it cause the feathers toecome brittle and break much like in frizzle chickens? Would it be bettet geneticslly to breed curly to smooth for off spring with fuller feathers. Just a question still learning

Sebastopol genetics are not like Frizzle Chicken genetics. You can breed curly x curly with no problem although twisted wing tip is a minor chronic problem in the breed most likely due to the curly gene mutation (IMO). You can learn more about TWT on my website or the Sebastopol forum, Hope this helps.

I am subscribed in. After reading the post, I sure have a lot to learn and I have had Sebastopols for 5 years. Thanks to everyone for sharing the information.

Thanks guys I am on a sebastopole geese lovers forum, but havent come across that subject yet thank you for your help!

I have a White Tufted Roman goose, and she almost flew away...actually she did, she just came back. I mean she literally flew into the air and was several hundred ft. up. Not a fun thing to see! LOL After that, they got their wings clipped.

Actually, my smooth grey Sebbie girl hopped over the 3ft hog panel this morning, and was running around outside the yard. She got spooked by the horses who came running by their pen.
