Sebastopol help, please!?!

How sweet of you to want to surprise your wife with some Sebastopols. i wanted them for years and then got lucky and found some goslings for sale last year locally, on craigslist. Then this year i wanted to expand my flock so ordered eggs on ebay and also bought eggs from the same woman i purchased my goslings from last year. Actually ended up with a good hatch, but they were a LOT of work. i had hatched chickens for years, plus turkeys, quail, guinea. Nothing compares to the dedication and work involved with incubating geese. i followed this wonderful guide and it was very helpful: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/491013/goose-incubation-hatching-guide-completed

i housed our original three in a 4' x 5' playhouse inside an 8' x 12' night time pen. After adding to the flock, we built a large shed using two old wooden 7' x 8' garage doors, with the other two sides chain link covered in 1/2" hardware cloth. So that sleeping shed is 8' x 8' with eight geese. i have three other geese in the original smaller coop. Everyone is out grazing the yard during the day.

The biggest issue we have faced is how loud they can be. The original three weren't too bad. But after adding the new kids, things can get pretty loud. And they will occasionally sound off in the middle of the night. My husband has to wear ear plugs to bed.

Also, when you think about the 20-25 year commitment . . . well, it's not like just adding another chicken. So, they are wonderful, but you really want to consider all aspects before adding these lovely creatures to your flock.

i hope you do find some locally, if you decide these geese are for you. i really love my kids, even though they can be a handful at times.
