sebbie goose internally pipped but......

I'm really confused. [-> :scratch] I've got three sebbie eggs due for lockdown tomorrow. Temps have been on point, running at 99.5-100.0. Humidity has been between 40-50%. The problem is when I candled them tonight, I found that the goslings are NOT taking up the whole egg in any of them. Two may not be alive, not sure, I see no veining or movement and they only take up about half the egg. However, this is where the confusion comes in....one is definitely alive and has internally pipped but again it doesn't take up the whole egg. I would say 3/4th is full. In the void area at the bottom of the egg I see strong veins. Should I go ahead and lock it down? This is as far as I've ever gotten with incubating sebbies.

Lismarc, that sounds about right. As the time approaches for the gozzie to hatch, the air-cell appears to get larger. It´s due to changes in the amount of water. The egg gets lighter, too. Have a read of the thread on incubating eggs so you understand it. It´s very good.

Thanks so much. I candled them again this morning. The one had moved higher into the air cell so I decided to go ahead and put all three of them into the hatcher on lock down. I'm just confused because they didn't grow enough to take up the entire egg. I guess we will see in a few days...

Lismarc, did you read that thread? The baby birds can´t ever take up the whole egg, it´s impossible. The air sac takes up the end of the egg, the baby bird never grows into it, as it needs the air to breath when it pips (breaks the membrane inside the egg). You´d find it so useful to read up the thread on incubating and hatching.

The air sac takes up the end of the egg, the baby bird never grows into it, as it needs the air to breath when it pips (breaks the membrane inside the egg). Oh gosh.. I must not have said it correctly. I meant it hadn't grown to the tip of the egg. The opposite end from the air cell. I can still see clear fluid with some veining. That was what was confusing to me. That and that it had pipped. Just didn't seem like it had grown enough. Last night only the tip of its beak/bill had poked through the air cell. This morning it looked like most of its beak/bill had penetrated the air cell. Gosh, I must have sounded like an idiot.. hahahah So Sorry for confusing you too. hahahah I can only hope this reply makes any sense.

Oh, I see. Well, just make sure any liquid doesn´t get into the gozzie´s lungs for it to drown, and keep an eye on it. If you´re worried, you could always make the smallest of holes in the shell, into the air cell, to see what´s happening in there, but the gozzie will probably do that tomorrow, anyway. Hope all goes well.

lismarc you Do Not put the eggs into lockdown with high humidity until the have externally piped..... Then you put them into lockdown.

OH CRAP. I did that yesterday however, I couldn't keep the humidity up. It kept dropping despite my efforts. It' reading 56% right now. I will leave it alone for a while until I see a pip. Does this mean I should turn them again, and put on lockdown again after the pip? Maybe put them in an upright position for hatch, like I do for my chicken eggs?

I clearly have a lot more to learn.
