Sebright Bantam Hen Suddenly Aggressive?

Oh, how cute! I love it! What an adorable little girl.

I'm not sure about the Kefir, but I think I recall people talking about it in another chicken group, and saying it was wonderful. But don't quote me. I wouldn't want to mislead you into doing something that might harm your chickens.

I'll bet if you Google it, you can research it and come to a good decision as to whether or not to feed it to your chooks?

Good idea. Oh, how I love my little Petrie (the one in my avatar). She fell asleep in my coat, but now my coat smells awful. Petrie smells awful and I don't know why... *toddles off to Google*

Please keep us posted about Petrie, Malibu. She's sure cute! Could she have sour crop? I think that may cause a smell? Could she be broody? Broody poop smells awful.

Her crop is normal, and she's too young to be broody (1 month old XD). I personally think one of the other chicks pooped on her, to be honest. They stand on top of the food dish to eat, and sometimes go on one another...

Could be. My chickens often step in cat manure and smell stinky. My cat Confucius got sprayed by a skunk the other night. Talk about stench! I'm sure a skunk was probably eating Confucius's food Confucius is a chow hound and no doubt got mad at the skunk, and tried to take over the food bowl... I think he learned his lesson.

I have read that very bad smelling chicken poop is a sign of a disease, but I can't remember what it is.

I did some research, and gleet was what I was thinking of. I worry about my girls getting it when they raid the compost pile, because the neighbors throw questionable items on it. The foul smell is around the vent when they have that disease.

Coryza, a respiratory disease, also causes a foul odor to be emitted from a chicken.

I hope it is neither of these, and just poop, as you suspect. Good luck!

WAIT! Hold the phone! I have fed every chicken have ever had bread and cheese! Is it bad for them? I don't really feed them rice, but cheese and bread?????? Should I really not feed it to my chickens? Why is it bad for them? My friend has 4 chickens and she feeds them cheese and bread to them a lot. Is dairy overall bad for them? I don't really feed them yogurt but I feed them cheese and other dairy products........

Read up on Fatty Hemorrhagic Liver Disease for yourself and see whether you want to continue feeding them cheese and starchy foods. I don't believe it's good for them, no. I hope to keep my chickens around a long time. Chickens can live 10 to 20 years. Do they like cheese and bread? Yes. But they also like cat food, which is very bad for them. I figure why take any chances, if you can help it? Enough experts have cautioned me against feeding them starchy foods like bread, rice, and cheese, which can fill them up and keep them from getting better nutrition from their chicken pellets which have what they need in them. Also, spinach, chard, and beet greens are bad for them. The oxylates in those are bad for them, inhibiting calcium absorption. They love the taste of them, though.

How many chickens have you had, and how long did each of them live?

It is controversial as to whether dairy is bad for them. Some say yes, and some say no. My chicken expert friend did caution me to feed only about 1 T of yogurt to them per week. More than that can cause diarrhea.

Here is a link that I think has some good advice about cheese, Chickens 4 Ever:

A chicken expert I trust told me that treats should make up no more than 10% of the chickens' overall diet. She said if it makes up more than 10% one runs the risk of pushing out the nutrients they need in their chicken pellets, because they'll eat too much in the way of treats and not get enough of the important nutrients they get from their standard chicken food, and that can cause them health problems, either now or on down the road...

Also, check out the very last post in the link above. It talks about dairy products and how some believe chickens are lactose intolerant and that feeding them dairy can affect their laying negatively. I've never seen that with 1 T of yogurt a week, but that is the only dairy I feed them.

I hope this is helpful to you.

My rooster, Baby, is on my head in the Avatar. He is half white leghorn (his father was a white leghorn). I do not know what his mother was, but I suspect she was either an Aracauna or a Buff Orpington, and I lean toward Buff Orpington, but I don't know how to explain all the blue in his feathering? So maybe she was an Easter Egger?

Petrie still smells. I found some poo on her underside (she probably laid in some... *facepalm* She's one of those chickens...) She still doesn't get the concept of dirtbaths. Her feathers are all gross and stuck together ._.

Is it just me, or did this become a chat thread? XD
