My ducks(calls) have the same kinda pond. they learned how to slide themselves over the edge, even the female scouvy has learned how to swim up to edge real fast and the just half fly, half slide out of it. maybe your ducks will be able to figure out how to do it too

I don't know how old your duckies are, but I suspect they'll be able to get out fine at some point. I don't have a ramp <I>into</I> my stock tank, just a ramp to the edge like the wooden bit at the top of the photo/video. (The stock tank is on a lower terrace in my yard and the wooden "bridge" goes from the edge of the terrace above to the stock tank. The ducks and geese walk into the tank, but launch themselves out of it all the time.

However, I also have a "wildlife escape ramp" which I built from a rectangle of expanded metal. One corner is bent to hook over the side of the tank and the opposite corner is bent the other direction to rest on the bottom of the tank. The two other corners are bent back to block off the area underneath the escape ramp, so submarine swimmers don't get stuck behind it.

Expanded metal is like that grate stuff, like it was pulled. Smooth edges to the grate holes so webbed feet aren't hurt, but can get a grip or hold with toenails if necessary. When a momma ducks took her babies to swim, they used the escape grate to get out until they were a bit older, at which time they just jumped out.

Ancona DUCKS had an upgraded pond today! took them until 7 pm to not be afraid of it and head in!

ummmmm but I screwed up..... they couldn't get out of it and the bottom is tapered so I cant put a block in it, so tomorrow I think I will make a hinged ramp into it that has a soda bottle with half water half air under it so it sink/floats to a good level that they can get on it to get out, just hope it don't take up too much room. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS not so involved and wont take so much surface area? THANK YOU!!

How cute. I hatched Anconas for last years Easter Hatch, they were delicious! Like others have mentioned they learned to get out. In the meantime your ramp idea is good.

I have a few of those plastic water barrels (kind of like a half wooden barrel in size).. the sides are straight up and down and they are almost three feet deep (not buried into the ground..just sitting on top). I have water lilies in them... so the ducks are SUPPOSED to stay out.. right?


wrong... I have three (mallard and cayuga) that have figured out how to leap up into the barrels.. then manage to get out once they are done churning up the water and making a royal mess of my lilies. The other ducks and geese are too fat and lazy to even attempt the feat...

Needless to say the lilies have been relocated to where they do not have to suffer the wrath of the three terrorists!

I set my eggs last night because I'm working today. Well my bator had been running from the easter hatch still (waiting on a couple of late eggs that never did hatch) so the temp was fine and has held really steady for weeks. I put in my 30 eggs at about 9:00pm. I checked on them before I went to bed at about midnight and the temp was reading 99. So I wake up at about 6:30 and the whole house is hot as heck. I check on the bator and it's reading 108! I cooled everything down pretty quickly and it's been reading steady at 98 for a while now. I'm pretty sure I ruined everything

Oh, Cuppy, I'm so sorry! I just don't understand how that happens! It happened to me last month at the end of a hatch and I lost 40 perfectly formed chicks at day 19. How can a bator that has held steady for weeks or months just decide to shoot up like that? Isn't it on a heat sensitive switch that should cut it off over 101 or so? Arghhhhhh! The bright side is that it was early in the game and you can start over. I know it would be hard to abandon those eggs, but if they were at 108 long enough to change the core temp to 104* they are dead or at least damaged. I wouldn't continue that bunch, if they were mine. I would start with new eggs right away. Bless you!

I had several Brinseas that did that.. would shoot up to 120 or better (a few kept rising)..
they have since relocated to the local landfill...


I wish Cuppy knew for certain how long the incubator was at 108... but I have to wonder if the eggs COULD be ok since the incubator is holding steady now.. i would think residual heat in the eggs would have given a high reading (assuming they had reached an internal temp of 104 or better) as soon as they closed it back up again.


edited to add:
though Cuppy.. you CAN get an idea if you're willing to crack open one of the new eggs and check the albumen and condition of the yolk... see if it has whitened or degraded at all. I'm not sure how long the egg would have to be at 108 to show visible damage.. but it's worth a peek... especially if you're going to toss them anyway)
