**~~>>Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon<<~~**all poultry welcome!

I am re-posting my Haiku (yes, I sent it in a PM to Wisher) because today is Day 20 for Punkin's eggs. She didn't leave the eggs yesterday, but DID go outside today in quite a rush. Spent far less time away from the dog bed, too.

Orange hen broods alone
On green eggs in green dog bed.
Small dog is not pleased.

so I have a question: in a couple of my turkey eggs and about half of the chicken eggs I set the same day (saturday the 6th, so today is day 10) I see what really looks like blood rings, but I also still see veins. My assumption is that they have bacterial infections and are dead but haven't been dead long enough for the veins to break down yet. Is this a reasonable assumption or could the "blood ring" be part of the vascular system? This is my first time incubating with a turner so I'm not used to candling eggs that haven't been laying on their sides. When they are upright the aircell obscures a lot of the action, so to speak.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are dead, I've had some problems regulating proper temp and I'm honestly pretty surprised and excited about the couple of eggs that look to have good veins and moving embryos. I marked the questionable eggs but I'm wondering how long to leave them before I check again/pull them out. Seeing as I've had problems I don't want to mess with things more than I have to, but I also don't want exploding eggs.

I never toss anything the 1st time I see it look strange. Check them again in 4-5 days & see if there's a change. By that time, any that have died will be obvious. Ones that just have strange vessel patterns will have further development

When the eggs are upright they can form veins in a circular way around the air cell area. At least that's what's been happening for me. I think it's all about egg position. I think they sound good. The couple times I've had blood rings, the veins didn't look right, right away. Keep 'em in.

I candled yesterday and out of the 41 dozen eggs I had 8 1/2 dozen were no good (some clear and some early quitters, it was day 10 for the eggs). 18 of the eggs had been refrigerated but I thought I would try them out anyhow, but only 2 developed, so that kind of throws things off a little.
On another note our cat brought her kittens out. My husband was home sick yesterday and had the windows down on his work truck. Apparently she decided the truck was a good place to move the kittens to (she had them under the house). He was putting some tools in the back part of the truck and she was in there and started hissing (which is out of character for her, she is a very calm, mellow cat). I guess she new he would smoosh them. So he found them and put them in our car that has the windows down. The kids where very excited to see them this morning. I will put up pictures of them later.

I candled last night (a day early

The Cochins are obviously growing. Sally, I think the Brahma shells are thicker, but I can vaguely make out faint red in most of them. I think by tomorrow night I'll be able to see more clearly!! So, YAY!!!

Well, I'd say, even being down 8 1/2 dozen, you're gonna have plenty of peeping in a couple more weeks. Congrats!!

Thanks! Most of those are chicken eggs that will hatch before the Cinco de Mayo hatch, but there are turkey eggs (and 10 of the 12 of those are good) and guinea eggs (66 of those left out of 82). And I have around 3 dozen chicken tutor eggs that I will candle next week.

I candled the 2nd batch of calls set for 5/7 last night & have a definite 9/12 developing with another 2 possible that I will check again tonight. Only 1 looked completely clear. Guess my little drake has figured out what to do after all.
Here's what I have in so far due 5/1-5/7:
18 calls (mine)
6 toulouse (2 mine, 4 shipped)
8 rouens (shipped)

23 silkies (shipped, going in today)
4 OEGB (3 shipped, 1 mine, going in today)
