And that's what I was thinking about Durr's eggs.. or maybe even tossing in some extra bucks to help with their feed bill

Hola, everyone!!

I have a numb butt from sitting on a cold cement floor in our basement long enough to candle a zillion eggs. 293 are left, with 11 more pipped (manually).

Remember that 112* overnight sadness I had back the day before the Easter Hatch? Well, I lost all of the Easter Hatch except 3, which the broody promptly killed (sooooo sad!!). I had ser about 250 (iirc) a few days before that spike and waited to candle, finally confirming losses in all but about 3 dozen. From those are the 11 that are pipped today. They are all bound to struggle after having gone through all of that, and I pipped all of the 36 to see where we stood. Most were gone, but 8 of the 11 were internally pipped, though in improper position to pip externally. I opened the very top of the egg to view each. Three were improperly positioned and of those, one was drawing back it's blood supply, so I went ahead and found its beak and cleared it of the membrane. It looks good, but hasn't begun to absorb the yolk yet, so we'll see. It would have been a goner, for certain if I hadn't helped, and in this case I've made an exception. If the incubation had gone normally, I wouldn't have helped, but this is not the usual scenario.

Now they're in there soaking up their yolks and the other 2 non-pipped have bright red, healthy veining, so I'll let them go a while. I hate this, but I'd hate to have a complete loss, as well. It looks like 2 Mauve Ameraucanas, 2 Lemon Cuckoo Orps, an Isabel Orp, a Chocolate Marans and a few others...so we'll see.

In the CdM set, I pulled a couple dozen turkeys (infertile early eggs from first year girls) and somehow still have 3 dozen. What am I going to do with that many turkeys?? I have a few dozen FBCM, Choco Ameraucanas, South Americans, a handful of Chanteclers, a dozen Konzas, and a bunch of Chocolate Orps...oh, and some banty Cochins.

I'll be setting up a roadside stand to get rid of all of these!!! Sheesh.
I'm curious about all of this Renee. It seems that a temp spike in the first few days would either kill the embryo, or it would survive and continue development. But I can't see why it would develop to full term and then not be able to get in the correct position to hatch just because of that earlier temp spike. KWIM? Is it possible these guys just hadn't finished turning into position yet?

Anyway, good luck on the hatch and I hope they're all able to make it out now.

YINEPU - I have a question about incubating muscovy eggs. How soon do you see veining on these guys? I don't like to candle too much but I have an incessant curiosity about how all of this works, so I know that I can usually see veining in a chicken egg after 3 full days of incubation, with a strong enough flashlight. But with muscovies taking so much longer than chickens, would you expect to still see the veining that early, or would it take a little longer for the veining to develop enough to be visible?

I'm not Yinepu, but I usually can't see much on Scovies until day 7-10.

Egg bombing can be a sneak attack if you know the person well enough to know they aren't going to hunt you down & shoot you for it.

Hello, Peeps! I am swamped at work so might not be able to get the poetry voting thread up as planned, but will as soon as I can. I stopped by TSC at lunchtime and picked up a magazine to read. It has a wonderful article on coop cleaning and a couple of other articles on grit in the diet and such. I hear the article on coop cleaning is by an up and coming freelance writer that some of you may know.........
I'm gonna guess it's by Hurley.

I was gonna say something like that.

Here's something funny for everyone. I went out to get some pics of my American Games and I noticed that my horse was acting nuts. Not so unusual, but sometimes he has a reason. I looked up after taking a few pics and there she was. The earless cow that lives with one neighbor and belongs to my best friend.

She was rescued from the Stockyard. She was born during an auction a few years ago.

I missed a couple days due to treating my sick kitty & did not read all the posts to catch up, so forgive me if this has been asked (and answered) before, but why are only 2 home if you caught the 3rd? Did I miss something?
My head has been spinning from lack of sleep.

I had thought about explaining that, but didn't think anyone would read it that close! I took the pair she brought specifically for me but the spare male was one she was showing and we left before the show was over. She dropped the young cockeral off to me on her way home from the show. He is now safe in his own bachelor pad, although I am thinking of putting him in with the hen this fall. What I really need is some Silver Campine hatching eggs............. anyone know where I might get some? Deb?

with a VERY good light I can see the barest beginning of the heart on day 4 on "early" muscovys
by day 6 it's more visible
I never toss one before day 10 though.. just because in every hatch there seems to be a "late bloomer".. or my light is in need of fresh batteries

yup.. day 7 to 10 is average.. but if your light isn't very good it's best to hold off on tossing them for a few more days

since I am always needing more bator room especially with shipped eggs.. I try to make sure my light has good fresh batteries so I can toss the infertiles/scrambled eggs sooner
