Looking for advice from more experienced hatchers: Is this Buff Orpington egg fertile?



We bought chicken hatching eggs this year because we lost our rooster last summer. So I was caught a bit off guard when I saw this when making breakfast last weekend. I haven't seen her fraternizing with our Guineas, but they all free-range so I suppose a cross might be possible. If the eggs look fertile, I'll collect the next 3-4 and stick 'em in the incubator to see what happens. Guins

I can see what you mean. There is definitely a disc of lighter yellow around the white. Hmmm. I would pop some in. Interesting.

i had a duck in with a rooster for a while (long story.. not for breeding though the roo certainly worked at it).. every egg was fertile.. nothing ever developed beyond a giant bullseye.. mainly because the chromosome count doesn't add up

even if one of the hybrids did start to develop many times they will die before incubation is complete.. and the few who do hatch rarely live beyond a few months

Good to know. And I also read the Miracle thread. Don't expect much, but will be interesting to see if anything happens. At least we know the old gal still got it! (And with a much younger fella too.)

From what I just read it seems that a cross is possible, though hatching rate particularly for hens covered by a guinea is very low.

I have no idea if that information is accurate. I am most certainly not a geneticist nor do I have knowledge of the evolutionary path of guineas vs chickens. It may be that they are like Horse/Donkey hybrids, closely enough related to breed but the off spring may or may not be able to breed in the F2 generation.
