I think the two of you won!!

Oh by the way debs_flock - I loved that pic of the cat on the post! What a great caption. Sadly, our cat is almost that fat. I never let him overeat but he had a stroke last fall and had to be kept in confined quarters because he couldn't walk 4 steps without falling down. He enjoyed the 24/7 access to food. Very much.

My fourth poult I wasn't sure was going to make it as it was very weak this morning and even when I held it, made no attempt to get its legs under it and wasn't even whut-whutting when I talked to it. I've had it in an incubator by itself to give it time to recover and just heard it start yelling a minute ago. I went in and think it was looking for its Mama. So I now have it tucked in my shirt where it is back asleep but looking much more like it will soon be ready to join the land of the living. Yay!!!
IMO Many cat dev diabetes because of the dried cat food and sedintary lifestyle-- just like humans. ANd horses. Hmmm. . . . got me to hinking that we are killing ourselves and our pets on all this high corn food. I've started supplementing my cats with real meat as a regular part of their diet. I do like the bright whte teeth on my cats from the crunching of kibble though.

Good morning all!

I believe I have just had my best and worst hatch all rolled into one. I had severa from my layer flock and Cochin pen as well as 6 shipped of mottled Cochin.

The best parts..
5 of 6 shipped eggs hatched
all except 1 of my eggs either hatched pipped or zipped

The bad parts
1 has an unabsorbed yolk sac
there was blood all over the bator from 1 that has like a bloody string out its belly
2 zipped partially around and stopped. After the first one died I decided to assist the second. After starting I decided it was almost as if the chick was too big for the egg. There were no veins left in the membrane and now all he needs to do is uncurl from the egg and hes out but hes still curled up for over an hour.
also the chicks seem "sticky" fuzz isn't fluffing the same. Humidity was high this time. Does that cause sticky chick?

So anyway...mixed feelings on this hatch. Advice and experiences appreciated.
High humidity can actually cause every problem you just described including drowning.

Quote: My kitty is a mouser, so no fat kitty here. She goes outside daily, climbs trees, chases mice & moles, plays & rolls in the grass & runs everywhere. She brought me 2 great big fat moles she caught in the yard yesterday. I told her what a good girl she was. She really helps keep the mouse & mole population down. Now if her 6 kittens are as good at it as her we may never see a mouse or mole again once they get outside...LOL

This was asked on another thread and I think its a pretty cool idea to know why others chose their sign on names!

Anyone want to share how you came up with your screen name?

SALLY SUNSHINE:
I worked outside many years as Horticulturist, my hair was sun bleached and I was the happiest healthiest girl on the earth as I tended to the land and my nickname grew as Sunshine or Sunny. So it stuck for computer alias ever since! I have since turned to poo on the outside, but its still me on the inside. :frow But one day I will be healthy again, I have to keep kicking sick's butt until then!

was it this thread or the Easter hatch we were talking about mustangs?

Cayuseranch
we wanted to name our little ranch after our mustangs. Since the name mustang ranch has some ahem... negative side effects, we found that cayuse is the Indian name for wild horse. Now its pretty much my User name every where.

I totally agree with you! I've never let a pet get fat before but this cat has been a mixed bag all along, having several ailments over the years that stumped our vet. Last year was the worst, when he had what appears to have been a stroke. By all accounts, strokes are rare in cats, but the symptoms all matched so that is the conclusion we eventually drew. He couldn't walk 4 steps without falling down and needed to be somewhere he was safe and confined. That was when he grew fat. But - it was not on corn! We buy a kibble that has no corn, wheat or soy, and meat is the first 3 ingredients. I do like how clean kibble keeps the teeth (we adopted a 5 year old dog with terrible plaque on the teeth and after a year on kibble she no longer needed a dental cleaning, even though she needed one at the time we adopted her). The cat is now walking fine and the only sign of what he's been through is that he holds his head on a tilt. So he is now allowed outside again during the day and with the increased exercise (and during the day he is no longer sitting in front of the food bowl), we are hoping he will slowly work off the extra weight he gained.

but I raise the humidity for hatch when I see the first internal pip.. usually day 25(ish).. but can vary depending on strain and incubator temperature
I've heard people say that before but does that mean you candle every egg, every day? I.e. how do you see the "first internal pip" without candling all the time?

I do when it's close to hatch date.. whether I have 5 or 500..

I mark all eggs that have internal pips and make sure they have room around them (especially if I am stacking eggs.. those would move to the top of the stack)
raise the humidity and monitor the eggs.. as soon as the chicks/ducklings/poults/(you get the idea) are clear of their egg i pull them from the bator and clear out the shells.. give everything a quick spritz of water and wait for the next

after all the pipped eggs are done I repeat the process

So I have the incubator open a lot at hatch.. I never have a problem with shrink wrapping either.. it's all in knowing your incubator and how it works in your home
