**~~>>Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon<<~~**all poultry welcome!

I keep forgetting to post this, but I finally candled all 17 quail eggs last night. I had one infertile and the other 16 are doing great. I'm really excited about it because this is my first time ever with quail eggs and with shipped quail eggs. I guess it helps that SilkieSensation did a fantastic job with packing them since none of the eggs were cracked and there was only one or two detached air cells!

On another note, I started craving ice yesterday and today I figured out that it had to do with me not getting enough iron. For some reason I can't absorb the iron in my vitamins and I plan to talk to my dr about it. I'm lucky dad bought carrots today. After eating one I stopped craving ice. I'm really lucky I was only craving ice and not some of the other things that I saw listed.

Wisher is short for Wishuponastar which is too long. Chose Wisher but it was taken so added 1000 – result of an age 30 funk; Deb has a lot of birds so debs_flock is the username and the space is separated with an underscore because of old Unix rules; gryeyes is grey eyes; Tammy N is a first name and an initial that could be a last name of a description or command; HappyAcresKY is for 100 happy acres in Kentucky; karimw is first name and last initials with wife added

SilkieSensation has the Turkey Coop ready! Nice!

CauyuseRanch, AKA Camarata, Mrs. Hernandez or Mrs. Jacox had one chick die, one culled and one doing ok. Had humidity questions too. Also, we are like a family…

The incubator still has some eggs hatching that were part of the vent shut problem. Hopefully they will start hatching soon.

Wow, I put way too little thought into hatching. My Tempe are +/- a degree fluctuation and humidity in Bator between 19 and 27, if I believe my gauges. I don't weigh, and lockdown is between 45 and 60. I use a couple gauges and rough estimate where I think it is in my head. Some hatches are good, some bad, some mixed.

Of course I only do this for fun, not business. I suppose I need to take this all more seriously.
You are complicating thing wayyyyy too much.

chiques chicks that is about how I work it too. I try to keep the temps between 99 and 101 (forced air) and do dry hatches. I never worry about what the humidity is. Once they are in lockdown, I add water and just try to keep it from going dry. I also only do this for fun (some good hatches, some bad just like you) so instead of running myself ragged over every little change I just don't sweat it. I probably would feel a lot different if I was doing this for money though. Wolfie, you need to at least get one of the hygrometers out of there so you aren't driving yourself nuts (well more nuts

ETA - I also never use the vent plugs for the one styrobator I have. I get the temps set with the vents open and incubate the whole time with open vents.

That's the thing. I could hatch like crazy till I started coming on BYC all the time. Marans hatched out great and now I panic, cause the minute I read where people had problems, I had problems.

I'm pulling the dang hydrometers. I was thinking about buying new ones, but I'm going to put these away and try without. AGAIN! After several years of watching them.

I remember that my great grandmother would put eggs in a bucket with a towel and leave it outside and get chicks. I hatched 3 chicks out of 3 eggs when I was 12 and did it by lining a shoe box with cotten and setting them under the lamo on my nightstand. My mom would sometimes turn that lamp off. I knew nothing about humidity and my mom told me once that she was going to toss the eggs after the time they were due and buy me chicks, but they hatched one morning and I woke up to them just finishing up. My mom was shocked and let every one in the neighborhood and relatives all over the country know. I hatched about 300 quail a month for my neighbor to pickle and her husband to take to bars and sell for me. I did those with a big box and lamp. Now I have REAL incubators and I suck! I'm not only going to set all these eggs, but I'm going to collect form my layers who are in with my purple egg project and stuck them in a bucket. If they stink I'll just toss it, but I'm curious!
Time to go back to the box & lamp

OK, no box and lamp yet. I usually use one or 2 plastic tubs for hatching and they disappeared, so I used on on the kind with the openings in the side and then a short box to separate the LF from the bantams and from some eggs that have smaller chicks. In this case Sumatras. I got rid of all the water and started over. I was shining my mag inside and realized I really have to many LF eggs in the basket to make hatching easy, so I pulled out the box and reached for the basket and something peeped. I looked down and one of the Sumatras is pipped. I still have crowded eggs, because I pushed it back in and the box too. No more drowned chicks! No more sufficated chicks! Vents will be only open like they always were before and I'm only adding a small amount of water at lockdown. Hopefully I didn't shrink wrap any of them. AND This is day 21 for the later hatchers and day 22 for the others, so I was off a day. I lost my mind almost 3 years ago, but I'm determined to get it back. Starting with this hatch! Like I said, I couldn't see anything in some of the eggs, but I'm making myself beleieve this is going to be the best hatch in a long time!
