**~~>>Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon<<~~**all poultry welcome!

I am so sad. 1 out of 5 hatched. I think the cold spell in the hatcher did them in.
Perhaps you need some poults? I have a bunch!!!

I have a question, would it be a good idea to use vinegar diluted in water to clean the wound on my hen? She had a patch of skin and feathers ripped out the other day when the dogs attacked. I haven't been able to find any other way to clean the wound and get the last bit of dirt and grass out of it. I don't want to use peroxide or alcohol on her, it just seems like a bad idea to me. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that. We also don't have any neosporin around or anything like it without a painkiller in it, so I was thinking about using Vaseline in it's place.

Both ideas (vinegar and Vaseline) came from after my dad had surgery on his face to remove skin cancer. It's what his Dr said to do and I want to know if it could be done to my hen with the same results.

She came out of shock yesterday and started eating and drinking again today. So long as she doesn't get an infection I know she'll make it.
Pain reliever found in ointment is okay as long as it isn't one that ends in '-aine.' Novacaine, benzocaine, etc...THESE are the ones that are dangerous for poultry.

I have used spray Neosporin many times when I didn't want to touch a wound like the one you describe. If there's tons of skin missing, you can coat non-sticking gauze with triple antibiotic and use paper first aid tape to secure it, then vet wrap to hold the whole thing on. The skin will crystalize back in, but takes a while, and she'll want to rejoin her pals long before it's safe to have others around the wound unprotected.

I brought in a nice calm friend for my injured girl to keep her company. Happened to be her brood mate & very close to her age & weight so they had always gotten along well. That way she wasn't alone in isolation for a month while she recovered. You just have to watch the friend doesn't pick her bandages or wound once it's uncovered.

Ugh :hit :hit :hit I gave the Five poults to my broody last night, and this morning they were happily following here around, and she was showing them were the food and water was, then I just went out to let everyone out for the rest of the day and found all five inin front of her, pecked to death, and her still growling and pecking and last one which died in my hands :hit :hit :hit No more babies for her ever again! :rant I'm so mad and sad, I wanted those royal palms so bad :hit I didn't even get a chance to take pics of them

Jody,

No bow tie. Gorgeous blue naked neck chick.

Wish I dared put it with the broody and the other 15 chicks, but I don't dare chance it.

The Green one is still in the bator, I'll do an eggtopsy on it tomorrow morning.

This morning, I did put a pin hole through the shell into the air sac... just in case.

It gets worse, they were for my son's bus driver. This morning I told her only one hatched, talked about giving it to her when she dropped off my son. So this afternoon I got the poultry and 4 tutor chicks in a box. I sat them on the porch, ran in to go potty. I came back and the box was tipped over and my cat was no where in sight. Chanting to myself "Not the turkey." ver and over as I rush to the box to find 4 adorable chicks and no dang turkey.

I should have stayed in bed today. My daughters dog drowned in the pond. There is a way for them to get out if they get in, but he was old and I think one of the other bigger dogs might have been "playing" with him.

Second Annual Cinco De Mayo Turkey Hatch a long Digest 5-6-2013

QuirkySue is having humidity issues—way too much. Debs_flock said to not worry about 95 to 96 temps if the humidity is high.

Razadia is having humidity issue—too low for quail.

Mahonri checked on the chicks and the broody was off of the eggs. The remaining eggs ere candled and two were put into the incubator. Later the one brown egg hatched Mahonri’s first Naked Neck chick! Pictures showed cute chick too.

Gardengirl73 lost 3 chicks. They hatched badly and it was likely due to being shipped.
somad.gif

Tazcat70 had 1 of 5 hatch; bator was to cold at one point.

CayuuseRanch has 3 poults! One died after pipping the wrong end—lots of blood in the shell so likely pipped into a vein.

Wolftracks has already rehomed the silkie that hatched and picked up pallet boards from Home Depot.

Mrshaggie810 had a temp spike. The plugs have been removed now.

Tammy N posted pictures of her Marans and Brahma chicks.. Lovely…

Wolftracks wonders abut sticky chicks and the cause.

Chicken Pickin has completed the hatch! 4 of 5 hatched!

I had Silike Senstation married early in yesterdays digest! That is not until October!

3 pekin Ducklings and 1 Bantam BO are out. A homemade bator was put together since the feed store did not have and incubator.

Mrshaggie810 has 2 eggs that were added late so they will hatch on the 7th. A 25 watt bulb was plenty to get her home made bator up to temp.

Razadia had chicks hatch like Ninjas!
lau.gif
They were not there and then were there without making much noise. An RIR hatched along with chicks under a broody. Razadia asked about the best way to treat her injured hen.

Nickie checked in—Set 18 Turkey eggs and 3 chicken eggs—16 and 3 made it to lockdown. 14 turkeys and 3 chickens hatched! Now the wait is on the Broodies with 13 under one and 16 under another.

JD4570 had a bad hatch for the first staggered hatch—all but one were early quitters with one making it to day 20.
hugs.gif

Gryeyes hatched another tutor and finally a tutee!

Wildriverswolf90 posted a picture of a Broody with her Brood! Post 3211.

Gardengirl73 posted a picture of her black chick with puffy cheeks in post 3213

Yinepu has a lot hatches coming up in May—almost every day it seems….

Manningjw had 13 of 14 locked down eggs hatch! Four of them were sticky chicks but the rest were fine.

Wildriverswolf90 found the poults killed by the Broody mom!

Mahonri’s Naked Neck does not have a bow tie. The green egg appears to be a quitter—egg topsy tomorrow.(unless it hatches at the last minute too...

You might be able to slip it in overnight or tomorrow night once it gets stronger.

I hope the other one hatches, too, but so glad you got a bare neck one. I know you can't have roosters, but all offspring from that bird will be naked necked as it has no bow tie.
