Second egg

I have 7 hens and this is my second egg. I'm guessing only one hen is laying. When will the others start laying? Also how often will they lay. I believe they are red sex links. First egg was on Tuesday and now Friday I get my second one.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! Congratulations on those first eggs! Red Sex Links are usually wonderful layers, they say the average start, 50% of them laying, is around 20-21 weeks... when they are going good, most will lay 6 eggs a week for their first year or so.

Congrats on your first eggs! Kelsie has given you some great advice. It also takes time for them to get their egg laying machines in gear. They will start to lay larger eggs and more frequently as time goes on. Each bird develops at her own rate, but eventually they will all be laying.

It takes an egg 24hours to form so we get one a day usually. I found out that because the eggs are mostly water the more fresh water I provide the larger my eggs tend to be... not sure if this is just a coincidence or if there is truth to it?

They will be 20 weeks old Sunday. Only one laying right now but no complaints. I love checking the best box to see what I'll find even if there's nothing. As soon as I see an egg I'm thrilled.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. All your Red Sex Links should be laying by the 24-25th week and when they are, you will get loads of eggs. Red Sex Links are egg laying machines. )

I think they are red sex links. Not 100 percent sure. Here's a picture. I got them at tractor supply in march and they were listed as red pullets.

Yes, they are definitely Red Sex Link hens. Very pretty egg laying machines.
