At 5 mo though, it's probably a hen, just getting ready to lay.

I see those few hackle feathers but no saddle most likely hen getting ready to lay

Cockerel. I see male specific saddle feathers. And that darker shade of red through the shoulder is male specific as well.

Yes that darker shade and hackle feathers normally contribute to make but I don't see the saddle feathers you mentioned above.
