Last week, we got a shipment of 1/2 bantams and 1/2 a 'Rainbow Layer Assortment'--25 misc layers. We lost one of the Rainbow Layer Misc chicks and every single bantam (12 of them). McMurray theorized that the bantams got chilled, so reshipped.
McMurray reshipped and they arrived today. We drove 120 mi round trip to pick up a day early at the main distribution center post office.
It's 95-98 under the heat lamp. They are inside in a heated porch where the air temp is boosted to 70 with a space heater. They all seemed vigorous out of the box. We've got Quick Chick, sugar, and teramycin in the water as suggested. But, it's not helping. We've already lost two and another 2-3 will be gone by morning as they are doing the wobbling, peeping a lot, and lying around. A few of them look vigorous, but one of the ones that just died was running around just fine out of the box. We dipped their beaks in the water when we got them, they all are eating and drinking until they hit the wobble leg stage and then die within a few hours.
They are 6 different bantam breeds including Arucana, Seabright, Buff Japanese, Old English Game, etc. So it's not just one kind dying off.
We have several other Mille Fleur bantams that are 2 weeks old from a local feed store who said they got from McMurray as well the week before our first lost batch. And those are doing just fine. We purchased them at 3 days old from the feed store. They have been eating/drinking the same things and are in the same brooder as both batches of lost bantams (assuming this batch is going the same way as the last one.....and they'll all be dead within 48 hrs).
Any suggestions on what we might try or are doing wrong??? This is our fourth shipment total this year from McMurray as well as we had one last year. We generally only lost 1-2 chicks total.
