Second Time Hatching — shipped & backyard eggs

16 total chicks hatched from Emmy when 42 were originally set in it. Well, they were originally in the 2006 crapubator. 13 were infertile and the rest were quitters except for two that got dried to the membrane and died. I had to assist the last two with hatching because the membranes had also dried to them. I moved them into Hatch Batch ( that I had just cleaned :barnie ) because I was afraid they were going to get trampled by the chicks that had hatched hours before them. They’re moving around and chirping, so I think they’ll be okay.

my only remaining shipped egg, the olive egger:

now watch them turn out to be a boy....the only chick I was keeping out of this batch lol

I feel you. My last few hatches have been awful, all with mailed eggs, so I'm sticking to local for the time being.
8 of the eggs were shipped, but the rest were from my chickens and a local guy. I know the big loss in the last batch was from the 2006 crapubator spiking to 106f and dropping down to 95f.

Kind of curious... is it possible to tell my oliver egger’s gender? Meyer’s says they make the cross with a brown egg layer hen and a blue egg layer rooster. The lil guy hatched from a brown speckled egg and they have a chipmunk pattern down. Some of the pictures from reviews looks like the dad was a legbar, but Meyer’s says they have different breeding programs for their olive eggers. So, I don’t know, honestly. Genetics are weird. Guesses on possible parents? Right now I’m kind of thinking welsummer x legbar
