heh. I have autism, and the amount of times I need to stop myself from explaining to a random stranger why they should have Plymouth and Easter Egg over Rhode Island Red............. lol.I recently toured a homestead farm as part of a work “field trip”. I teach environmental science at a botanical garden/ nature center. I left the homestead and knew I wanted chickens. Never had it ever even crossed my mind until I was touring the farm and started envisioning my 2yr old son helping me tend to chicks and eventually collect eggs. How wonderful to teach him so many lessons as a family!
Within 3 days I had a coop ordered and 4 Easter Egger babies in a brooder inside my garage. (Thanks to my supportive hubby, he was all into the idea)
These chickens have brought so much joy into my life. I love tending to their needs, checking in on them, watching my son help take care of them. I spend so much time in our backyard now I’ve even began painting a wildflower mural. This I huge for me, I feel like I’m finally coming back after having my son two years ago.
I am so enjoying this phase of life. We have had the chicks about 5 weeks now. They are officially free ranging during the day and sleeping in their coop at night. I can’t wait to see where this journey will lead our family! I pick up two Americauna pullets on Saturday and I was SO EXCITED!
I don’t have any friends that are into chickens…. Here I am keeping my love for the chickens a secret to avoid looking completely crazy to those close to me!
