I have been lurking on this post but missed a few days and went back to read up. I feel bad for your Momma Hen. What have you decided about the day old chicks?

It was such a sweet story.

Nothing has been decided yet. I plan on going home tonight and checking up on her again. I might grab a couple eggs and taking them outside to see if anything is developing. I will take pictures and if the consensus is to post them I will (depending on graphic nature of what I find too).

She is a very determined and protective momma. I just keep praying that when I get home I find some pipping and zipping.

If I do order some chicks I am thinking I would be ordering 25. I have done some research prior to now and found the best prices vary depending on what you want. I was thinking a Brown Egg Assortment from Welp (25 for $57.75) or individual breeds from Ideal, or Rainbow (25 for $67.45) or Ornamental ($85.95) from McMurray. All of these prices include shipping charges and are (I think) close to the correct price.

My wife is going to kill me if I tell her I am buying chicks!!!

I would not open them in the house. If they are bad the smell will be unbearable and lasting. Welp has great chickens, that is where we got our. Healthy beautiful breeds. I made our own assortment and was completely satisfied. I am sorry if you have no babies. We had a broody that only managed to hatch 1 out of 9. It was really sad.

Our silkie hen went broody on one sweet little egg, after about 30 days we finally forced her off, we all greived the absence of that baby for a few months, it was really hard.

As a family we're finally recovered from that loss, it often comes up, "remember when Chloe was going to have that chick?" and its sad to remember.

We are careful now to pick up eggs daily as possible! The greif over losing a chick is hard, nagging the kids to collect eggs in a timely matter is FAR easier. It took Chloe the hen a couple months to rejoin the little flock, too, they didn't recognize her after her long absence and pecked her at first.

We had thought of getting her a chick, but in the long run I am glad we just greived and got used to it. Our lives are complicated enough without MORE pets to care for. And it's OK to greive, especially the loss of babies!

Whether you gain new chicks or not, I wish you luck and safe passage through a strange, new time.
