Secret hiding place (picture heavy)

Wow, so sorry to hear. Why don't you get some day old chicks and remove the eggs and put the chicks under when she's asleep.
That totally did the trick for us. My Broody gal, was on her nest for a month, and was starting to loose condition, so out went the eggs and in went the chicks. She became a mother overnight and she was sooooo happy. That was nine weeks ago...and she laid her first egg yesterday, and totally went off mothering her chicks (pullets). She has laid again today.
Love Cath.

jrleader99- I have been following this thread since you started it. I have been waiting hopefully, fearing this outcome with that many eggs. You proved again by your last post what a good pet owner you are. I know it was hard to do, and you feel bad, but you really shouldn't. Use it as a learning experience. I am sure you heard about hens hatching huge amounts of eggs, and thought yours would be able to do it. You didn't mean any harm, and I am sure your hen wouldn't have done as well if you hadn't intervened. Maybe there will be some of the ones left under her that are still growing(maybe use a really bright light and candle them). I am sure you will make the right decision about whether to give her a fresh batch of eggs, or day old chicks, as I saw suggested in an earlier post. Has she been eating well enough to sit another 21 days? I will be following this thread, hope the next few days finds you with baby chicks, and a happy mommy hen.

so sorry to you, the family and momma!

I hate to say this, but no way would I make that hen sit another 21 days! Her health will be at risk if you do. She's already probably very thin and malnourished. I had a hen almost die on her first broody attempt; cant imagine making one go again back to back.

I'd say the decision is up to you as to trying to raise another batch, day olds, or going without.
But I had a similar incident and lost all my first batch and I gave her another batch and kept trying.
She had a couplt loses in the second batch but had a few babies hatch out and became the great mama
that I knew she could be. It was great fun watching her bring them up to the beautiful birds they are today.
I hope she goes broody again this spring, and can raise more babies.

I personally like the idea of putting several day-old chicks under her. As the previous poster said, though, it's your decision.

She may be put at risk if she tries to sit for another 21 days, though!
